Just a bittersweet vanity thread announcing that my 18-year-old son left today for Air Force Basic Training. This is a boy -- a man now -- who has gone through a lot in his short life. A few years ago, he turned it around and started on a rigorous road of introspection and self-improvement. And it worked.
This is finishing school for him. He has been training to be an Air Force Combat Controller for the last 18 months.
Today, he stopped being ours and became the property of this country. He will do it proud.
I am VERY HAPPY he will have a NEW commander and chief very soon!!! Help is coming his way thank goodness!!!! May God watch over and bless him always!!!!

Congrats! Proud day!! I did my AF basic at Lackland in 1970. First week was rough, mostly mental games plus sleep deprivation and long marches. Not too bad after that. Don’t be surprised if you don’t hear from him for awhile. They are pretty strict about that, trying to turn a motley group of civilians into a real part of the armed forces.
Sounds like he has the right frame of mind and will do well. Good field he’s going into. Air Force is a good career, or a stepping stone into a good civilian job.

When my daughter was in Coast Guard basic, I wrote her a note every day.

Congratulations to you both! I’d suggest that you write him as much as you can while he’s in basic, they really like getting cards, jokes, “attaboy” letters, etc. Really helps.

I did mine in 1967, retired in 87. I was at Laughlin for 9 years, so I got back to Lackland a lot. I went to the NCO Academy there, when I was at Travis.
