FDA Approves Weight Loss Stomach Pump AspireAssist to Combat Obesity

The Food and Drug Administration approved a new and unusual weight loss device Tuesday: an external pump that dumps part of the stomach contents into the toilet.

Some critics have called it "assisted bulimia" but the device, approved for use in very obese patients, helps them lose on average more than 12 percent of body weight — far more than pills or most diets.

The device is considered minimally invasive and includes a tube that goes from the inside of the stomach to a port on the outside of the abdomen. The pump can be attached to the outside port as needed to remove about a third of the stomach's contents at a time.

Aspire Bariatrics of King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, which makes the device, has a video about it here.

Clinical trials showed patient lost an average of 46 pounds during the first year and another few pounds to make 50 pounds of weight loss by the second year.

"The AspireAssist device should not be used on patients with eating disorders, and it is not intended to be used for short durations in those who are moderately overweight," the FDA said in a statement.

"It is intended to assist in weight loss in patients aged 22 and older who are obese, with a body mass index of 35 to 55, and who have failed to achieve and maintain weight loss through non-surgical weight-loss therapy."

"...helps them lose on average more than 12 percent of body weight — far more than pills or most diets."

and how much of that weight is still off 3 years later? It's not that hard to crash away a bunch of weight in the real short term. Maintaining a lean body over extended time is tough though and requires discipline.

Yeah, because there's absolutely no abuse of prescriptive abilities by the doctors in this country for personal profit. Ask Michael Jackson and Prince.....Oh, wait......

I can see the commercials now.

AspireAssist -- safer than vomiting, more convenient than laxatives.

Again, we seem to be finding more and more ways to work around personal responsibility and accountability.

Hmmm, I have noticed she does tend to go to the bathroom right after we finish eating.

My observation is that most severely overweight people lack knowledge about what they are putting in their body: they seem to honestly believe they are making good choices. I have relatives in that boat. I’m astounded by what and how much they eat, but they truly think it’s pretty healthy. I was headed in that lifestyle as a teenager and adult. At 22 I decided to give up anything labeled diet, light, or low fat and some weight came off. I’ve transitioned to less processed food and more real, whole food and for twenty years (and having six babies) have maintained a normal weight without ever “dieting”. I remember the misery and tears of frustration from before. I was all over a lack of knowledge.

There’s a book called “The Fat Switch”. Sugar is a killer-it messes with the hormones that stimulate your hunger as well as those that recognize you’ve had enough. It makes you always feel hungry and never full. While I’m in the normal weight range, I went a few years with no sugar. No matter how much I ate, I couldn’t go over 117 lbs (I’m a 5’5” woman). Once I started eating dessert on Sundays I gained 10 pounds. Just one treat a week affects a normal weight person that much.

ExLax is cheaper, less risky (usually), and fewer side effects.

Sugar is also packed with calories. I think a single Oreo cookie is 100 calories. How easy is it to side down and eat 10 - 15 Oreos in front of the TV?

I’m having a bizarre diet success story. I was angry at God over continually unanswered prayer, and also reading about viking culture. And in my anger I proposed asking the Northern Gods for help. Won’t detail the supernatural occurrences, except !!!???!!! My painful shoulder got 75% better, but apparently “They” don’t think much of ‘fat acceptance’, They also didn’t think much of my weed habit :O Gone.

Imagine the theological quandary. And things keep “happening”. I’ve called on them three times formally over 2 and a half months. Not as a lark but deliberately, to see; clearly answered prayer is something new. And occaisonally it’s near a conversation.

And I’m looking & feeling so great...groan...why couldn’t I be born normal ;)

Oreo cookies: Serving size 3 cookies
Calories per serving 160

[The package is in front of me now!]

You were close. 53 calories per cookie. Definitely not what you want to eat if you are concerned about weight.

The mistake I've noticed in most people who cannot control their weight, part of what you say is lack of knowledge and bad choices:

So often, they'll take the attitude that it's okay to reward oneself if they diet all day tomorrow. So they eat a 1000 calorie hamburger and fries or something equally calorie heavy. If they diet the next day, the most they'll save over what they need is a few hundred calories. And "exercise it off"? Most are delusional about how few of those calories will be burned off by a walk or a half hour in the gym. It just doesn't work. The only way to succeed for folks who have tendencies to overeat is to find healthy food choices that they enjoy. And for women, figure out a diet of 1100 calories a day (or so) that has adequate nutrition.

On the plus side, it's getting much easier to find good food choices, both in the grocery store (better ingredients) and in restaurants. But a person has to learn what to look for.

Whenever anyone asks me how it's done, I try to keep it simple to get them stared....no sauces or high calorie drinks, no white bread, no French fries.

Way too easy. Thats why I eat only 5. Granted, I combine two Oreos into one and get rid of the cookies. Double stuffer. Now when I take double stuffers and combine them..... OMG that’s good.

You can’t out run a bad diet.

Moving does help, probably because it keeps you from eating ;-).

I was an athlete in college-did more intense exercise than you can imagine, but apart from those three hours a day was fairly sedentary while eating the wrong things. It was incredibly frustrating. Again-lack of knowledge.

Now I never “work out”, but move through out the day, sitting only for meals, an afternoon cup of tea and in the car. I started waitressing again after a twenty year break-that must count for something! I move as fast as I can for about six hours a week. The trade off though is late night meals. I keep thinking I should skip supper but am so hungry that I eat every time.

You are correct that you cannot "out-exercise" a bad diet BUT exercise is essential to maintaining a lean body for most. Not only are there the calories you burn while exercising but regular exercise will increase your resting metabolism which is where most calories are burned. If the exercise increases your muscle mass (weight training) it will increase the metabolism even more. The general rule of thumb is that fitness is 70% diet and 30% exercise.

When our nieces were in college they dipped Oreos in peanut butter. I almost had to bite my tongue off when hearing about how good that was.

Good morning. My first thought was “Rome” (You know, the binging and purging). I really hate this idea of a stomach pump - it’s just to sell something, it’s not going to help anyone lose weight long-term or get healthier, I bet it will have the opposite effect.

Second, I’ve been doing intermittent fasting for a few weeks now and losing some pounds (or mass), but even better my body feels younger.

It’s limiting calories to 500-600 a few days a week and eating normally the rest of the time. Look it up for more thorough explanations, but basically you’re helping your body lose inflammation and stop overloading it. Blood sugar, pressure, cholesterol ... etc. Really makes sense when you read the science.

For a long time I’ve thought that we are taught to be afraid of being hungry so that we consume, consume, consume! 6 (small) (yeah, right) meals a day plus snacks to keep you going, and don’t go to bed hungry. Even the old “if you skip a meal your body will go into starvation mode” is really BS.

So I’ve been doing this for as many days a week as I can, not just 2. I do eat normally otherwise but I normally eat pretty well. Sugar in coffee on Sunday, whole foods, few processed, etc., but I gained 30 pounds a few years ago and have not been able to get it off. I’m a middle-aged Italian woman with a damaged pituitary, so it’s no wonder. The only other thing that seems to work is 10 hours a day or more of constant exercise. This fasting method seems to be helping - slowly, but with added benefits.

Good luck and God bless us :)

Does it help if you wash them down with beer?

Not that I would ever do that :)

I agree with what you’re saying. The folks I’m referring to are the ones who are deluding themselves by saying “I just exercised for a half hour so I can have a (400 calorie) fruit smoothie”.
