Alibaba’s Jack Ma says fakes are better than originals (many made at same factories, in China?)

Many counterfeit goods are now of better quality than the genuine articles, Alibaba founder Jack Ma has said in comments set to infuriate luxury goods makers who accuse the Chinese ecommerce group of profiting from the sale of knock-offs.

"We have to protect (intellectual property), we have to do everything to stop the fake products, but OEMs are making better products at a better price," Mr Ma said, referring to original equipment manufacturers that typically make products for branded sellers.

"The problem is the fake products today are of better quality and better price than the real names," he said during a speech on Tuesday at Alibaba's headquarters in Hangzhou. "They are exactly the (same) factories, exactly the same raw materials but they do not use the names."

The offshoring of our industry is near its logical conclusion.

Chinese factories, are making the originals, and also the fakes. According to the article.

First I had heard that.

This will not end well.

I don’t know who Jack Ma is, but I do know people have been killed by defective Chinese car parts.

Chinese factories, are making the originals, and also the fakes.

You did not know that Chinese factories make product, and the Chinese, well versed at reverse engineering and rip-offs, are also making knockoffs? Of course they are LOL They have been making things and copying those same things for quite some time. Many big companies are obsessed with security at Chinese factories to protect trademark etc, but all the compliance manuals in the world won't help lol

If the same factories are making the fakes, as the originals, why are they of higher quality?

First, if they are the exact same factories and exact same materials, why is the knockoff of ‘higher quality’ than the original? Is the ‘original’ actually “seconds” presented as ‘original’ quality? And second, how competitive is that price minus the heavy subsidy the Chinese govt gives their manufacturers of knockoffs, a subsidy that isn’t passed on in savings or discount to the Brand buyer of the ‘original’ product?

I used to sell high end goods on eBay. Accessories. Jewelry, handbags, etc. I knew this. There are ways of telling the fakes from the real ones since the quality control is not there but sometimes they’re subtle.
That’s why half the stuff on eBay now is fake.

The quality control is not the same.

He’s exactly right. Many of the companies hired by designers ‘moonlight’, take the patterns of designs, and use cheaper fabrics.

My words to Jack Ma would end up being the localized equivalent of “citation needed”.

There is a difference between an OEM and a counterfeiter.

Every spring in the world (Practically) is made by Eibach. If you buy a car spring (In particular) it’s just OEM from Eibach with a different name on it.

Look at Tenneco in NY (Rye). Those guys make every damned muffler there is.

That actually isn’t necessarily a mystery: as an OEM part it may be made to maximize the profit margin and that may, may I repeat, not “will”, result in the manufacturer being told to skimp is different ways.

But they may not do so on the equivalent parts they make to sell themselves.

Mr Ma is basically presenting the scenario where all OEM is substandard and at least a big chunk of “knock-offs” are not. “Exaggeration” is a word that comes to mind.

Companies that use China to produce goods then jack the prices on Americans after cutting them out of employment to make the goods but then bitch if those very same Americans buy direct from China disgust me.

When eBay let the Chinese come in it ruined my business except for repeat customers. Most people can’t tell the fakes from the authentic stuff. I can spot a fake a mile away unless it’s a AAA but looking at it I can tell. Most people can’t.

I have read that there are only a handful of optical glass makers in the world.

I think Schott in Germany is the largest. Nikon makes their own and there are probably a couple more in Japan. Rochester New York used to have at least one, maybe more but I suspect there are not any there now.
