Look out for the original model Sony Walkman from 1980. Hope you enjoy. ”Skateaway”

Love the song, Mark Knopfler’s guitar and the minimalist video.

The lady skater passed away a number of years ago.

“Making Movies” had one of the best album sides ever: Tunnel of Love followed by Romeo and Juliet followed by Skateaway.

I discovered Dire Straits (and this song) back about 1983 when I was living overseas in New Zealand with my family. They were on a concert tour back about that time and did shows in Wellington (where we were) and Auckland at least. That was back when videos were an art form and top 40 radio ruled big time for me.

Yep, I make the case that “Making Movies” and “Love Over Gold” were the two best back-to-back albums made.

This is one of those rare songs where you feel like you've heard the chorus somewhere before, like you've always known it ("She gets Rock and Roll, on a Rock and Roll Station . . .")

Every so often, Dire Straights comes with a real winner, and this is one along with "Money for Nothing" and the "Sultans of Swing" which is now a standard.

They also were playing straight rock and roll in a techno/new-wave era without ever falling into heavy metal. The only acts from 1980-81 that were doing that coming to mind were Tom Petty and the Heart Breakers, Phil Collins and Del Shannon (comeback album "Drop Down and Get Me". ELO went Disco for Xanadu, as did Elton John for "Victim of Love" (the most "mailed-in" album I had ever heard, he didn't even bother with keyboards).

Cool. Making Movies solidified my Dire Straits fandom. But until now I never realized there was a video for "Skateaway."

During the drumbeat lead-in, I am invariably counting the bars. And, invariably, once the organ joins in, I realize I'm two beats out of sync. Haven't been able to correct that in 30 years.

She was quite a charming lass in the video.

And on top of that was Knopfler’s fantastic score for “Local Hero”.

My favorite DS song is “Telegraph Road” - especially the Live Alchemy version.

Hard to find the full 13 minute “Live Alchemy” video of that song but worth it if you can. Here’s the audio matched with a strange video.

Knopfler’s guitar work is amazing especially his 5-minute “rant” at the end.

Glad I could introduce you to the video - one of the all time best music videos, in my opinion.

Hoo boy. What I think you meant to say was that "Who's Next" and "Quadrophenia" are the two best back-to-back albums made. If you want to go for three best, that would be "Bringing it all Back Home," "Highway 61 Revisited," and "Blonde on Blonde."

“Look out for the original model Sony Walkman from 1980.”

I still have my TPS-L2.

It really was a game changer.

I read somewhere that Dire Straits was the favorite group of Princess Diana and that she loved their music best of all.
