Contraptions allows players to build elaborate Rube Goldberg-type machines. You won't need to wait long to get tinkering, since it's out next week. According to Bethesda, "With Fallout 4 Contraptions, use conveyer belts, scaffolding kits, track kits, even logic gates to construct crazy and complex gadgets to improve your Wasteland settlements. The Contraptions Workshop also includes all-new features like elevators, greenhouse kits, warehouse kits, fireworks, armor racks and more!"

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition is a remaster of Bethesda’s best-seller [update]

So, who’s up for being a born-again Dragonborn?

Bethesda is releasing The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the publisher revealed tonight from its leadup event to the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. It’s coming out October 28. Skyrim racked up more than 20 million copies in sales since its original release for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, making this role-playing game one of the 10 best-selling games of all time as of 2014.

Skyrim focuses on the exploits of the Dragonborn, a hero who journeys through the northern regions of Tamriel to stop the draconic threat. The Elder Scrolls games are open-world romps that feature a great deal of character customization — players do not find themselves committing to one type of character and can instead mix-and-match many different abilities, like swordplay and magic. These characters aren’t set on a linear path, which enables them to explore various areas as they weave in and out of the main storyline (hence open world).

And if you own the PC Legendary Edition, you get the special edition as a free update.

I replayed Skyrim until I could do it in my sleep. One of the best games ever. Fallout 4? I paid for the DLC-inclusive package and can’t muster the interest to go back in and play them. It’s a drudge of an action game, and I have no interest in building amusement rides. Bethesda, you’re jumping the shark.

Have you tried modding Fallout 4 to make it more to your interest?

There are quite a few clever, free mods to push the game in any direction you would want to go.

No. The endless trekking to the same sites over and over isn’t my idea of entertainment. What a lousy game. They’re trying to do to much with it. Sim gamers aren’t shooters aren’t Civ gamers aren’t farmers etc, etc.

To be fair, under Bethesda, Fallout has always been more of an RPG than a shooter.

One of the first posts on Bethesda’s shiny new page provides a road map of what’s to come this summer in order to improve the mod experience for Fallout 4, with perhaps the most important message coming from the developer involving the growth of the mods’ size limits of 2 GB. As it happens, the studio writes it’s “working with Microsoft and Sony to increase the storage limits on consoles,” and is looking to expand the feature’s possibilities on the hardware.

A lot of the repetition and tedium in Fallout 4 comes from the Minutemen faction. It’s ashame they introduce that so early in the game. A lot of people get sucked into those stupid Minutemen settlement quests and put off the main quest line.

But my main complaint wth Fallout 4 is the neverending bugs. It gets tiresome trying to work around the settlement bugs, for example, and that’s a real demotivator on these workshop type DLCs.

I do think they did a good job with the Far Harbor DLC, however, and I thnk Nuka World will be fun.

The mods are pretty limited in what they can do. Some modders have tried to create new quests, but they are so constrained in what the tools allow them to do that they come across as limited and klunky.

The other sorts of mods genereally fall into these categories:

1) Improvements to the textures and other visual changes
2) Convenience improvements - examples are the Settlement Managemen mod or the mods that let you locate/track companions.
3) New weapons and armor - most of which lead to overpowered characters.
4) Bug fixes
5) Nude/skimpy-clothing mods

Many of these are fun improvements to the game, but IMHO don’t really extend the life of the game much. Now if Bethesda released a tool that allowed modders to create real quests, that would be a different story.

The Creation Kit was released on 6/1, give it some time before more complex mods are available, especially on the consoles. Most of the mods currently available were built from scratch. The mods I am using are all works in progress.

That said, I am currently using the unofficial Fallout 4 patch, one that allows me to have Dogmeat plus another companion, an armor overhaul, one for more and greener vegetation, one that allows more cleaning in your settlements, chickens and rabbits in your settlements, etc.
For me, they do change the game significantly.

I agree about the Minute Men. If or when I ever replay this game I will make a point of avoiding Preston Garvey until the main quest is over. I believe the game would flow better that way.

Just yesterday, my character was approached by PITA Garvey who informed me of another settlement that needed my help. The settlement was Sanctuary. I was standing in front of the Sanctuary workshop at that time.

The raiders were in Thicket Excavations, which was fun, but upon returning to Sanctuary to drop off my loot, PITA Garvey approached me again to tell me of another settlement needing my help.

Yes, Sanctuary. Again. I swear I am not making this up. This time they were in the Olivia satellite station, which I had already cleared in the Abernathy Farms quest. So yeah, Scutter, you make a great point.

Which reminds me, I have gotten to where I avoid Abernathy Farm. Despite having a defense rating three times higher than its resource rating, and despite having a wall, guards and turrets, it seems like EVERY time I go there, either the wife or daughter has been kidnapped. Usually by the same raiders at the same place that I just rescued them from.

It's still a great game though, and I have not had too bad of a problem with bugs (Xbox One). Much better than FO3 or New Vegas on Xbox 360, let's put it that way... and if you want to read about somebody who has played without ever even leaving Sanctuary (!), read this. It's hilarious!

LOL, I had a very similar experience. Just stop responding to his quests, and eventually he will stop giving them to you. You can also move him to another settlement (Hangman’s Alley is my go-to settlement for the annoying NPCs).

I am using a similar set of mods - just pointing out that while they improve the vanilla experience somewhat, they aren’t of much help once you’ve finished all the quests and visited all the locations in the game. I’m even running out of perks to get...

Regarding the “creation kit” the comments from modders have been that there’s not much extra value there. I don’t think it will improve the quality / type of mods - just makes them available to XBox and PS4 users.

Ha! I never thought of that! I will move him to Hangman's Alley tonight in fact. Can you assign him to something productive like tato picking, or does he just wander around?

Thanks for the tip!

Yes, I have him manning a bar now, and I had him picking Mutfruit before I moved him. Some of the NPCs (example: Marcy Long) won’t actually always visibly do their assigned task, although even those you still get the happiness bonus as if they were. But Preston actually does what he’s assigned.

One thng I am really looking forward to in that Bethesda DLC is those stocks they show Mama Murphy in. I hope that’s real as I want to put Marcy Long and her husband in those.
