"It was the dark of the moon on the 6th of June in a Kenworth pullin' logs..."
Bill Fries aka CW McCall performs Convoy on the Mike Douglas Show (August 1976)
A lighthearted recollection of the CB rage of the 70s and a reminder to bear in mind what the true significance of June 6th is.
Brings back great childhood memories. Thanks!
Great 70s song, lousy movie.
Monument and cemetery at Bois de Belleau, France, where on June 6, 1918, the US Marines stopped the Germans and turned the tide of the war in the Battle of Belleau Wood
I loved that song because I saw it as a protest against the 55 mph speed limit that President Nixon had imposed on the country to “save energy.” In my view, getting rid of it was President Clinton’s greatest accomplishment.
“When I saw the movie, I thought it was the worst I had ever seen with the exception of Casino Royale.”
Three Casino Royal movies:
50’s made for TV with a real looooooser as JB.
1967 with David Niven as JB (good trivia question - name the actors who played JB - few ever mention David Niven)
2006 with Daniel Craig.
Which one were you referring to? Just curious.
I had ALL of the CW albums on eight track. Good stuff. Strangely, Convoy was one of their few songs that I didn’t care for.
I do recall seeing Fries on American Bandstand doing this one with a Jeep CJ on the stage.
The 1967 version, which I saw in the theater at the time it was first released.
The 1954 version doesn't count because it's a TV movie, although I saw it on the big screen at the University of Southern California's Bing Theater, and I liked it. Afterwards, Harry Nelson, who played James Bond, addressed the audience, which included many students at USC's film school.
I didn't see the 2006 version--the 1967 version left such a bad taste in my mouth that I had no desire to see it.
That's what made it great.
“1967 with David Niven as JB (good trivia question - name the actors who played JB - few ever mention David Niven)”
I won a radio contest once because I knew that. There was also several other folks that went by James Bond in that movie, including Peter Sellers.
I think it’s a HOOT of a movie.
Then there was Jimmy Bond in “The Lone Gunman”
One of the most horrific memories of my childhood was watching McCall lipsync this on TV.
I think you mean Jimmy Carter. He mandated that all states lower their speed limit on Interstate freeways to 55mph or lose all federal funding.
Thanks. You abated my curiosity.
“I won a radio contest once because I knew that. There was also several other folks that went by James Bond in that movie...”
I believe that Woody Allen played the part of James Bond, Jr.
Pretty wild...
“Yeah, but the 50s TV one had the great Peter Lorre as le Chiffre, who steals it.”
Yes. The following is a link to the 1954 Casino Royale movie, if you wish to watch it again.
