Same in Utah. Stay clear of Moose. But Elk are dangerous if less aggressive. Like any wild animal.

I was white water rafting up in northern Maine, and as our bus made its way down the dirt road to the starting point, we passed an enormous bull moose standing a foot or two off the road...with a woman about 10 feet away taking a picture.

The bus driver slowed down very carefully, and hissed at the woman something to the effect of “Get the **** away from that moose you stupid ***** idiot! That thing can kill you!”

The huge moose was so big I think the woman’s nose would not even have touched the bottom of the shoulder muscle. The rack looked like a person could have laid down in it, and it was placidly chewing, looking at the woman with stupid looking eyes.

The driver muttered all the way to the building, and said to us “They look dumb, stupid and incapable of doing anything, but that can all change in a split second, especially during rutting season. That stupid idiot has a death wish.”
