HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Beer-buying Pennsylvanians are seeing a growing number of options where they can pick up a six-pack or two, though Pennsylvania still remains home to some of the nation's most restrictive beer sales laws.

This week, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board licensed nine more convenience stores that sell gas to carry takeout six-packs, despite a pending state Supreme Court case that could theoretically invalidate those licenses. In the meantime, it was another step toward loosening the control over takeout beer sales that, for decades, has been largely the province of bars and larger-quantity beer distributors.

I remember State Stores back in the 70’s. It was like going to the DMV for booze.

The laws concerning liquor are so restrictive and obviously crooked there, I’d just smoke pot instead.

God Bless Nevada. We can buy a gallon of Everclear at the gas station at 4 in the morning on Easter Sunday.

I kind of like our beer laws. It always helped we Pennsylvanian’s identify the out of state people when they would ask where the beer is, while shopping in the grocery store.

The beer laws in Pennsylvania are insane. First time there I wanted a six pack. Was told to go to a distributor. Went there and found out I could only buy a case at a time. No six, or twelve packs. Was only there for one night so asked the employee. He said I could go to an eatery or bar and buy by the six pack. So I said to him, “I can go to a bar, drink all night then walk out with a six pack?” He said, “yep”. Insane.

First time I was in Pennsylvania, I walked into the Walmart and started looking for the beer aisle. Couldn’t find one. Stopped a (really cute) walmart employee. She shook her head and said Penn was light years behind the rest of the country. I could buy beer at the grocery store, but not Walmart, and no wine. For that I had to go to one of the state monopolies called “Wine and Spirits”.

Ridiculous in my opinion.

Alaska has only one really stupid alcohol law. Liquor can only be sold in an area with its own entrance. So no beer or wine or liquor in grocery or convenience store aisles.

In Missouri when I first moved there in 1982, they were called Package Stores. You went in and bought a brown paper package. They also had blue laws, no stores open on Sunday, that changed while I was there.

Yeah, but New Jersey has jug handles and the strangest left turns in the country. When we’re traveling through Jersey in our motorhome towing a car, we rarely go beyond the exit on the freeway. No telling where or how we’ll be able to make a left turn into a grocery store or Walmart. :-)
