A woman is feared dead after a crocodile attack in Australia's Daintree National Park.
The 46-year-old Australian was reportedly swimming with a friend on Sunday evening at Thornton Beach near Cairns in northern Queensland state.
She was in waist-deep water when she was attacked, media reports said.
The last fatal attack in the area occurred in 2009, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corp.
"We would hold grave fears for the welfare of the woman," police spokesman Russell Parker said.
"Her 47-year-old friend tried to grab her and drag her to safety and she just wasn't able to do that.

I dont have to swim faster than the crocodile... Just faster than you.
“We would hold grave fears for the welfare of the woman,”...
ya think?
Ummm..Ain’t usually just one croc. Maybe fifteen or so, dependant on where you decided to die.
And then maybe they can make the same leap when it comes to analogous concepts such as the difference between the Religion of Peace and the actual religion.
Yeah, I blame Disney for many unhealthy attitudes about wild animals.
The Jungle Book by Kipling was pretty violent. (Still anthropomorphised animals far too much)
But the Disney version is positively toxic in anthropomorphism.
Always bring a friend to test the waters for you.
I won’t get in any water except a pool. We have a boat and I am chief chef and bottle washer while they’re diving. I’ll even carry them beer and make sandwiches. Just don’t ask me to get in the water. Lol
Crocs kill more people every year than any other animal. It is estimated that some 5 people per day are killed by crocs in Africa.
Darwinism at work.
“Darwinism”
Just unintelligent decisionism.
I thought hippos were the most deadly?
Cue Theme from “Jaws”.
Yeah that ain’t Wally Gator out there.
Where I am, we only have to worry about Swimmers itch. No crocs or sharks where I am.
I’ve heard that Hippos kill more people than any other animal in Africa.
Oh nonsense. As if anthropomorphized animals didn’t exist before Walt Disney’s huge success.
Cute animal stories are as old as time. People aren’t so stupid as to really regard them as reflective of true wildlife. Biggest difference is mowadays, people don’t generally actually interact with these wild beasts.
I won’t swim in the ocean in low light and certainly not at night due to potential for shark attacks rising under those conditions. What sort of lunacy led to a night swim where there are salt water crocodiles?
