“John Wesley Hardin traveled with a gun in every hand”
"I want to be your baby tonight", "Tonight I'll be Staying Here with You" and "Idiot Wind" sounded great on that tour..
I’ve seen him just three times, and one of those times was unexpected. (All venues in the L.A. area). The first was on the “Saved” tour in ‘80 at the Santa Monica Civic. I knew he wasn’t going to be playing any of his old tunes that I loved, but I went anyway. Glad I did. Man was he inspired. Gospel suits him very well.
The second time was at a Taj Mahal concert in ‘87 at a small club (the Palomino), where Dylan and George Harrison were sitting at the bar watching him play. John Fogerty was sitting at one of the tables as well. They all joined him onstage about halfway through the show. Dylan was drunk and happy, didn’t play well, and sang even worse. But no one cared.
Here’s a video of the 2-hour concert: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=314ADFn4xmA
Great music (I’m a big Taj fan), but the vid quality is horrible, unfortunately. Barely watchable. Music starts at the 32 sec. mark. Went with a buddy of mine, but spent most of the evening with a N’awlins chick who just graduated from Tulane whom I’d just met at the bar. We ended up near the stage on the right, but I can’t spot us in the vid.
Third time I saw Dylan was at the Pantages in ‘92. Real solid show where he covered material from throughout his career.
Cardinal4, you were fortunate indeed to have seen the Rolling Thunder tour in ‘75. He opened that tour within walking distance of my house, at the Troubadour club. (After that it was all much larger venues). I was very young (11) at the time, and it was hush-hush — no promotion. So I missed it.
Here’s an amazing rendition of “Tangled up in Blue” from the Rolling Thunder tour: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwSZvHqf9qM
Oh no, I didn’t see the Rolling Thunder stuff, my first time was in ‘86, opening for the Dead with Tom Petty’s band backing him.<p<If memory serves there are bootlegs from Europe of the Troubadour show you mentioned..
