Good news for Windows 10 users: you can now block internet ads in the Edge browser just like those with Chrome and Firefox do! Extensions for both the AdBlock and AdBlock Plus services have come to Microsoft's new browser, and are now available on the Windows Store. There is one small requirement, however, and it's that users need to be Windows Insiders with build 14291 on the desktop.
Non-Insider users will still need to wait until this summer to take advantage of extensions in Edge, when the Anniversary Update for Windows 10 is released to the public. Once that's out, the Edge browser will actually become much more functional for those using Chrome or Firefox. To switch from either of those without the option for extensions creates a much more limited browsing experience.
As for AdBlock and AdBlock Plus, they were each first announced for Edge some two month ago. Now that they've arrived, they bring many of the same features as versions for other browsers, including controls over what type of ads to block, as well as whitelisting website where it's ok to display ads.
As ad-blocking tools have been among the most requested extensions for Edge, this will likely make many Windows 10 users happy, or at least those in the Insider program. Once users have downloaded and installed AdBlock or AdBlock Plus, they just need to restart Edge and adjust any settings in the browser's extensions section.
Edge is still not ready for prime time. It is a lousy browser.
If you add Share via Email app Edge is a excellent browser.
I don’t use edge at all. I think it is telling the MS hid IE from the user and presents obstacles to making it - or any other browser the default.
I’ve been modestly successful in mitigating the migration experience for people by restoring IE (or better yet giving them a 3rd party browser like FF or Pale Moon) for their browsing and email needs.
Anything edge can do the others do better.
Who would that help the basic browsing capabilities?
Now I can at least ditch Chrome.
Is there a cost for AdBlock?
Good news, except that AdBlocker is going commercial and letting ads from advertisers who pay them enough to get through the block and show up.
Likely, some other software developer will come up with an alternative.
It’s free.
Also, Ad Blocker Plus is better than Ad Blocker.
I'm on a dial-up line (transitioning to hot spot WiFi) and Ad Blocker Plus is a definite advantage. Blocking a site's .css and .js files speeds up page loading a great deal.
Not that I use Cortana, or even Edge, but last I knew, Cortana needs Edge.
Just sayin'.
(I go between FF and Brave)
That’s the first thing I disable.
The latest problem is with websites that detect the ad blocker and refuse to work properly or tell you to get lost.
I get that all the time with my browsers with ad blockers.
I took the plunge to Linux. Now I wonder why I waited so long.
Lot of that going around, more and more. Glad you like it. :-)
Thank you Chuck.
I must have turned something off, because I don’t get ads in any higher volume than I used to with the old system.
