I’ve had a few serious accidents myself in my lifetime from ballistic horses to ladder failures, and greasy heavy lift machines where I slipped in the cab, and landed on the hours meter box re injuring the healed previous ballistic horse injury. In all cases it took almost two years to recover from each of those incidents.

Now I’m old enough to be dead, and some of the old injuries are “talkin’” to me. I can feel them somewhat all the time again, and as when a tree was split, and fell in the heavy winds recently I tried to work cleaning up the mess, and now I’m hurtin’ for certain.

Take it slow, and easy. Don’t try being a youngster again. It doesn’t work. There’s no going back.

Had one of those ballistic riding incidents. Felt like my innards were a scrambled Rubik’s Cube for a week. Luckily I landed flat on my back with nothing broken, but other old back injuries come back to haunt me now and again.

It’s ok to take slow gradual small steps to reach your goal. Don’t try to overdo it

Glad you are better.

"One day finds me in Rehab waiting my turn and feeling sorry for myself. It’s hard not to spend some time in self-pity though I usually can keep such feelings at bay. As I sit in my chair a gurney is wheeled into the room and parked behind me. I turn and observe a young guy lying on his back, bare-chested and wearing a “halo.” Halo is the name given to a full neck brace that locks to the head with metal screws through the skin to the skull and secures to the shoulders. It is definitely a serious gizmo and makes me queasy when I see one since about the only thing not broken in my accident was my spine. The guy wearing it lies motionless and because I can’t see his face don’t know if he is awake. When my therapist arrives to accompany me to the Crip Board, I ask about the young guy lying silently on the gurney. I learn that one night a week or so ago he drank a six pack and then thought it would be great fun to take his motorcycle out and see how fast he could go through the city streets. He ended his ride with some superficial cuts and bruises plus a fractured C2 vertebra the same injury actor Christopher Reeve suffered in his horse-riding accident. The guy with the halo is 20 years old and can now look forward to being paralyzed for life, baring any unforeseen medical breakthroughs. I suddenly feel not so bad."

Best wishes on your recovery. Unfortunately I won’t see you-—we leave permanently for AZ next Saturday.

Good news.

Take it easy on the rehab.

My wife has had a lower back injury since January.

Whenever, she and/or her PT up the game too much and too fast. She has a small reversal. Now she is walking 4-6 times a day for 4-5 minutes instead of one 20 to 30 minute walk. This seems to be working better and dividing up her daily exercises (not walking) into 4 times a day instead of once a day.

Walking is probably the best thing you can do, along with yoga-based exercises, but don’t overdo it. Best wishes with your recovery.

One time I fell down some steps backwards. I noticed that time went a lot more slowly as I was falling. Did this happen to you?

I remember losing my balance, and the next thing I remember was the EMTs trying to get a board under me to carry me to the ambulance. Evidently I got knocked out when I hit the bottom of the steps.

Larry:

Is this retirement, or a change of jobs? In any case, good luck in AZ.

I doubt you’ll “retire.” I haven’t. You’ll find something to do. I did.

Just read of your fall. Wow! Have you tried PT? I fell a year ago- lumbar fracture and slipped disc. The PT exercises and massaging really helped. The back just likes to keep reminding us that it is there! Gentle attention, but with consistence. Good luck!

This past Thursday the doctor cleared me for normal activity. Friday morning I returned to my former thrice-weekly routine of 20 pushups. I made it through them, but I was shot rest of the day. I've got to get back to exercising, but I can't jump in all at once.
