Can you imagine what traffic would be like in America today if there were no expressways. If every commute was at 10-20 mph peak speed with stop lights at every corner.

Expressways are a good thing.

One expressway that Manhattan could have used was the Mid-Manhattan Expressway, which was intended to unify what was then I-495 by connecting the Lincoln and Midtown Tunnels and make a continuous interstate highway from the NJ Turnpike onto the Long Island Expressway. Instead, 42nd Street and the adjacent narrower streets are clogged with the traffic between the two tunnels, and the former segment of I-495 in New Jersey is now NJ state route 495.

Expressways that detour the ghetto are a great thing. Less opportunity for the bad people to prey upon the innocent.
