Can you imagine what traffic would be like in America today if there were no expressways. If every commute was at 10-20 mph peak speed with stop lights at every corner.

Expressways are a good thing.

One expressway that Manhattan could have used was the Mid-Manhattan Expressway, which was intended to unify what was then I-495 by connecting the Lincoln and Midtown Tunnels and make a continuous interstate highway from the NJ Turnpike onto the Long Island Expressway. Instead, 42^nd Street and the adjacent narrower streets are clogged with the traffic between the two tunnels, and the former segment of I-495 in New Jersey is now NJ state route 495.
