Maybe it's just me, but if I were writing that article, I think I would have asked NASA what their theory is on the rectangular shape of the nebula. All this writer says is that the nebula is caused by the star(s) at its center, but offers nothing to explain the shape.
Even science journalists today are thoroughly inept, it seems.

Looks to me like we just happen to be in the right place relative to this star, so we’re just about exactly perpendicular to the star’s poles. The “rectangle” is two cones of matter being blown off the poles of the star. The diagonal lines are just the walls of the two cones, which are tenuous enough that they only seem thick at the point where we’re looking at the edges of the cone.
