Planned Parenthood protests causing concern in Circleville (Ohio)

CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) -- Police were called to a protest at a Planned Parenthood clinic on Lewis Avenue and Court Streets. Anti-abortion demonstrators have been permitted for protesting there for months, but when pro-choice activists showed up last week without a permit, city leaders reminded them of an ordinance that requires a permit.

Some anti-abortion protesters put graphic signs near the clinic which offended one mother of a five-year old boy who lives across the street.

Angela Shaw-Gellerson said there's no need to get ugly and complained to police about the move from a side-street to in front of her home.

"I don't want to have to explain that to him right now, later on in life, maybe. Let's just put it out there: it is a woman's choice."

Pro-choice demonstrators on Tuesday received the necessary permit from the Safety Director's Office, but the city law director said if the two sides clash and there is violence, they may not allow both sides to protest on the same day and time. Sarah Peters, a 20-year-old Circleville native with the pro-choice group, said they are intimidated by the anti-abortion protectors' actions.

"They are trying to start confrontation with us, being very aggressive," said Peters.

Allow me to translate that. She does not want to explain to her 5 year old that she aborted his sibling.

A permit is permission to do that which is otherwise unlawful. To get a permit to protest means you are approved by the government to do so. Why do we put up with this? Even if it is illegal according to our overbearing government, it should be done anyway. Permission to publicly disagree. We’ve come a long way from our founding fathers.

By the way, you have a God-given right to free speech AND to assemble. These are merely guaranteed by the government (or not), not granted by the government. They have no permission under natural law or the constitution to require a permit process. This falls in the same category as “free speech zones,” etc.

Don’t need a permit to protest, no matter what authorities say.

OWS did this on the Mall in DC. Didn’t bother w/permit and city powerless to stop.

If they do stop/arrest, it’s a civil liberties violation.
