You'll probably die well before decrepitude sets in. And with a satisfied smile on your face. Has anyone ever seen a happy Vegan?

My mom died in her 90's, in full-blown dementia. Really nasty.

I would rather not put my kids through that. I would rather have an enjoyable life, have a bit of time with my grandkids, and check out around 80-ish while my mind is still functioning.

I’ve long loved hot, spicy foods but as time goes on I’m finding that I’m having to slowly cut back due to digestive distress. Jalapeños were the first to go, not exactly sure why because I can still enjoy other, hotter peppers. The seeds, maybe.

Just saw your comment.

I had a similar thought a few days ago, myself. Sometime between 80 and 90, but only if all systems are "go".

I can’t eat hot food either. I get an infection in my gut. Wish that didn’t happen.

I’ve been told that eating spicy foods helps prevent a bacteria that is responsible for many if not most stomach ulcers. So, it’s sort of protective but if you already have an ulcer it’s too excruciating.

And if that cup of coffee in the morning doesn’t wake you up....give it a few minutes. :^)

[Weird news ping. I promise to only ping weird news to spices/herbs RARELY.]

Want a healthy, cheap, and easy cure for constipation?

I don’t take laxatives any more. Too harsh, unhealthy, and not effecitive.

A glass of orange juice while swallowing one or two magnesium pills once a day. [A fresher alternative to the salty junk they sell you in the glass bottles.]

Just be forewarned, if you take too much of either at once, it will get you ‘moving again’ like Sanders on a squatty-potty.

I often skip it for a day or two.

Works by the process of osmosis. Fills the stomach with water which flushes the entire digestive tract. It’s like an enema in reverse. AND magnesium [cheap, over-the-counter at vitamin department in WalMart] is great for increasing blood flow, preventing strokes, increasing brain power, etc.

Must have OJ and magnesium at the same time. But if you have an empty stomach the affects seem to be slower. The magnesium and oj apparently separate too quickly after entering the intestines.

~~~
Glad I caught this thread. I suspect that ALL spices boost metabolism, and I have noticed how strong spices calm allergic reactions through distracting the nervous system.
Some of them also kill bacteria which is what causes ulcers in the stomach. [While milk-for-ulcers FEEDS bacteria.]
Other spices ...
Cinnamin is a powerful benefit on the pancreas. Prevents and treats and might even heal diabetes. Also balances out the metabolism. Lastly, seems to be a mood elevator.
~~~

Rosemary!

Herb secret to long life?

Has a mellowing affect. Probably reduces stress. And could be other properties.

I’ve been adding infusions of rosemary into tea. Great zing to it. I tie it in a cloth bag and nuke water with it before microwaving tea in it.

Do you have to slowly work up to the two magnesium pills? I eat a high fiber diet but could always enjoy a faster digestive track.

I can't do statins. Found a doctor who understood that finally. I take red rice yeast and niacin 2000mg right before turning the lights out so i am asleep before the flush starts. Cholesteral has been 200ish or lower for 8 years. I have high HDL, 65ish which is why the 200 isn't as bad as it sounds. An aside she shoots, her assistant shoots, and her associate shoots so its usually a fun visit.

Would those be soaked pinto beans? Love those pintos. DH swears by cayenne. When feeling a scratchy throat coming on signaling cold/flu - he takes a teaspoon of the cayenne in a cup of warm water, gargles and it almost immediately helps to keep the bugs at bay. It is also good for cuts, placing it on the actual wound helps to stop bleeding. There was once a study done years ago by a doctor who had kept a heart beating in a cayenne solution. That report read about 10 years ago. True? Who knows, it was on the internet so who really knows. There have been many studies of ‘ancient’ medicinal remedies as passed on by old wives tales. Seeing lots of old wives these days, how about old husbands?

Seriously, olive oil, vinegar, cayenne pepper - all are good for certain ailments. And BUTTER over that manufactured stuff they attempt to force on many of us.

Cayenne pepper is a part of my “medicine chest”. For instance, I mix a half tsp with 6oz. of water and drink it down whenever I have an upset stomach.

Here is a terrific website on the health benefits of cayenne pepper;

Careful with that! Those are now linked to kidney disease/damage. Article seen in this past few days. Antacids used can cause kidney damage.

your last line brought my sympathies.

As an American of Italian descent, I almost wept for you.

But you can have bacon/ham/wings/chilli. that’s good.

Well, my cholesterol is in the stratosphere so either I cut back or hope they have this food in Heaven.
