That woman is 87 years young. She carries a walking stick, at 2 in the afternoon in July. When it is easy 102 degF in the shade. While mowing her big old yard. With a push mower.
This woman is just my old next door neighbor here in Garland but she is an icon to me. Born here, in Garland, and lived here her whole life. Woman knows everything that ever happened in this city. I asked her about an old dilapidated pool or swimming hole or something I saw when I was out roaming around on my mountain bike. You know what that gal told me? "Oh yeah, that used to be a real popular spot in the summer, especially in the evening. My Johnny proposed to me there."
How does a man respond to someone answering a stupid question with a line or two like that? That's Vanda.
My "other GF" says She Who Must Be Obeyed. Bet she was a hottie back in the Texas Swing days. I asked her about another place, old burned out bar. Or something. She told me her Johnny used to take her there to play pool and dance.
Woman is solid gold. God loves you Vanda, me too.
I love stories about people like this. Sported a 50’s flattop throughout the 80s because I would only go to real barber shops, just so I could hang out with the WW2 and Korea vets.
My genetics will never let me get as far as her.
Sounds like my Mother, different breed, tough ol birds!
Love Ya Maw.
Very cool story, Chuck. FR needs more of this, esp. right now. I am surrounded by “seniors” in my neighborhood, and treasure every moment with them.
I have my Charlie, an old retired southern cop. My boyfriend and I take him to Outback Steakhouse once in a while. He’s a hoot!
