An amazing talent and by all accounts an amazing man.
...always looked forward to international games between England and Europe when stationed there in the early 70’s
I remember the name, so his play must have been
impressive RIP
Yep, even those who didn’t follow soccer at least knew two names: Pele and Cruyff.
I’d add Beckenbauer to that list for defending Cruyff so well in the ‘74 match. Godspeed to Johan and his family.
Amazing player, so lucky to see him once (1984 Rangers vs Feyenoord).
Wow, pretty young. I always teach my players the Cruyff move.
He single-handedly made FC Barcelona the powerhouse they are today.
Even at 37, he was a class above. Beside him was an 18 year old called Ruud Gullit.
Ironically, MOTM was the Rangers winger/legend/genius (and my idol) Davie Cooper, who died tragically young at 39. Cooper is the last true genius of Scottish soccer. So impressed was Gullit by him, he still names him in his all time XI on that one match. Rangers won the friendly on penalties after a storming 3-3 game and extra time.
RIP.
