House of Cards
my tired old brain ^ | n/a | Me

I'm sick of talking about politics today. I was wondering if anyone has been watching House of Cards and noticed that it looks like the show is jumping the shark. The original Brit version was only 12 one hour episodes and was nice and succinct. The new one is 4 seasons of 13 episodes now. I was hoping they would end it this season but apparently the show has fallen into the "milk it for all it's worth" mode. From the blurb on the last episode it's obvious that they are going to do yet another season.

Well, this year they are just in doldrums mode. I've been watching the show because I'd like to see Doug drawn and quartered for murdering that girl and the Underwoods hung from trees. The show has done enough to show us the venality of the characters and it's time to put period on them. The acting is good and the plots have been engaging but I'm just not interested in another season of more of the Underwoods' nefarious activities. Even the unusual and surprising dynamic of having the evil pols being Democrats has worn off for me.

Being Hollwood they couldn't resist throwing some love for the gun control movement this season and have managed to make national politics as depicted on TV pretty annoying and boring at the same time.

So, so long House of Cards. I'll probably check it out from time to time to see how it ends. But now I've had enough. Too bad that American TV shows have to beat everything to death.

Back to Poirot. They have the entire series on Netflix.

Why watch make-believe politics when you can watch real politics?

Quite clearly, you are jealous of Frank Underwood...

Jumping the shark seems to be in vogue these days.

I haven’t watched TV for 25 years, and I don’t miss it a bit. Everything that comes out of Hollywood just keeps getting worse and worse.

So, of course, the show is worse than the earlier version. They always are.

I got sick of it last season. In the original version, Francis dies.

I thought it jumped the shark when it included members if that band pussy riot, last season. The scene was lame and lazy, IMO.

Well you can bet they are not tired of you. They never give up on ways to get more power over you and your life. Remember, the object of Power is POWER!

Urquatt was much more thoughtful in his plans. Underwood’s plans are rooted in a naive understanding of American politics by the writers. I am still shocked they made Underwood a democrat.

I enjoyed this season, especially the arc with Ellen Burstyn as Claire’s mother. I’d still like to see both Underwoods and their sinister little hatchet man Stamper get their comeuppance, but I’ll have to wait until next season. I think the real life election will influence how the next season is written. I think the series will wrap up after that.

I am still shocked they made Underwood a democrat.

I read an interview if the show's creators. When asked why the Underwoods are "D's", the said had they been "R's" there would have been criticism "well, there goes liberal Hollywood again." By making them Dems, they appeal to viewers on both sides of the aisle.

This does not stop them from also pitching liberal ideas/values via the Underwoods.

I have not started Season 4.

The current political theater is too intense and surreal.

I will wait for a while before delving in.

This season was better than last, but the plot lines last season were infantile. When you see all the executive producers on the credits you will find out why. Just about everybody acting in the series has a say in the production.

I preferred HOC when it dealt, as the UK version did, with governmental machinations having major consequences. This season was intermittently boring with too many occasions requiring suspension of disbelief. The Secretary of State is a powerless cipher, the Russian and US presidents do most of their business over the phone, and the president suborning his own cuckolding was beyond the pale.

And yet I watched it all, and will watch the next season. I blame myself. ;)

Yeah, I noticed that too. And Spacey talking to the camera all the time is lame.

Yeah. This season’s plots require that we believe that everyone is completely naive, stupid and incompetent except the Underwoods.
