I understand what you are saying, but it isn't the best analogy. A dog has some independent thinking, a car doesn't.

Yes, it is a somewhat imperfect analogy. But they are both subject to the control of a human if handled properly. A dog's propensities are basically a product of traits of that breed, being a dog period, and training, upbringing, environment. As well as the personality traits of that individual dog, regardless of breed.

One shouldn't expect a dog to think and reason like anything except a dog, anymore than one should expect a car to be safe at 110 mph on a 2 lane country road. If one does, then the error is human.

One doesn't put a dog breed that is a hunter /tracker in with very small dogs. The prey instinct makes them see a small dog the same as any other prey animal. That's not a flaw, that is a normal trait that one takes into account. If you do and the small dog gets mauled, it is the human's fault.

But what does this really mean? Yes, the dog is a dumb animal and the people with bad judgement are to blame. But what is the bad judgement? Owning pit bulls! If you aren't running an illegal dog fighting ring then owning a pit bull is bad judgement. If it's only yourself at risk than I'd say that's a choice but those dogs can and do harm children and others at a disproportionate rate. So if it's the human's fault, is the remedy to not allow human's to own the breed?
