Spartacus was a bit controversial when it was released, as the screenwriter was Dalton Trumbo, who had been blacklisted by Hollywood for being a communist Kirk Douglas, was he also a communist? He seemed awful cozy with Trumbo.

Kirk Douglas was an active Democrat, friends with John and Robert Kennedy. But he and his wife Anne were also friendly with Ronald and Nancy Reagan for decades.
