Thanks for giving me some insider knowledge of the club scene and the BP. I notice lots of chat when I watch videos made at the BP. You can hear the waitresses clicking glasses and bottles around.

I love Jazz/Rock/Fusion. I live in Austin Texas, we have Eric Johnson and a few other good players and no real fusion scene that I know of.

You’re welcome, but please let me clarify 2 things:

I lived in LA for 25 years but those 25 years ended 10 years ago; and all that implies. Meaning, my opinion as to the BP are that old. It is entirely possible they bought or leased a neighboring store, busted down the interior wall, and now it is a much better space. It’s also possible they did that THEN GAVE UP the space because they could not support it. I simply don’t know. So I meant no comment on the “scene”, only the BP and that info is 10 years old. After 1-2 times going there, I just found there was a pile of 6-7 irritations about the place and I could maybe handle any given 2-3 of them but not 6-7. I just never walked out of that place being able to say I had a good time or enjoyed it or that it was worth it.

When I first moved to LA, there were decent numbers of small clubs scattered throughout the area, and with so many players there, naturally some liked playing clubs near home and would do it cheap enough so the the economics of the venue worked without charging what would be todays $35 door for a ticket.

So if you found Geo Van Eps or Howard Roberts local bar, you could go see them in a small pickup combo playing standards in a small clubs for $5 every once in a while. And I did. Only one more way the 80’s were some good times.
