In the early 60's Milsap was on a soul music label and played with musicians Stevie Wonder, James Brown, and Ray Charles. (the later had been a big influence on him.
His first hit, on any chart was Never Had it So Good which hit #19 on the Soul chart in 1965. It was written by Ashford & Simpson.
His 80s hit Any Day Now had been a soul hit for Chuck Jackson in 1962.
