President Barack Obama will ask Congress for $755 million for cancer research in his upcoming budget, the White House said Monday, bringing the total price tag for Vice President Joe Biden's cancer "moonshot" to $1 billion.
Research into immunotherapy, combination therapy and early detection techniques will be at the center of new programs the administration hopes to create at the National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug Administration. Vaccines to prevent viruses that cause cancer are another focus, officials said, laying out for the first time how Biden will seek to fulfill his goal of doubling the rate of progress toward curing cancer.
"Our job is to clear out the bureaucratic hurdles, and let science happen," Biden said in an email to supporters. ...

And the cynical quest to build up Obama’s pathetic legacy with meaningless gestures that everyone knows are for PR purposes only continues. They spent more money on focus groups to come up with “Cancer Moonshot” then they will spend on actual research. I’ll be so glad when this dope is gone.
A drop in the bucket. Why, we’ve spent more on Barky and Mooch’s vacations.
I was hoping it was a story about sending Biden to the moon.
Have McConnell and Ryan run to the nearest microphone to praise Obama and personally ensure he gets this billion?
Obozo couldn’t treat a sunburn for as little as a billion.
If be game for this if it was a real program.
But we all know the money will just be sent to Democrat cronies.
1b??
Let’s get Trump in there and make it really Yuge, like 5b!!
Come on folks, it will be great!
I suggest giving the extra dough to NIH. My research has been supported by several grants and I can honestly say we have contributed to the development of some effective cancer therapies. Having said that I’m sure there has been significant waste as well. I’d be interested in following where this billion dollars actually ends up. My cynical attitude towards this administration tells me this is nothing more than a slush fund for political paybacks.
M.D. Anderson has moon shot programs for 12 types of cancer and have plans to expand them to others. Even the current moon shot programs research are helping with cancers not yet part of the Moon Shot programs.
Where do you do your research?
My NIH research was conducted at the University of Kansas, dept. of Medicinal Chemistry. We developed an effective semi-synthesis of the cancer drug Taxol (Paclitaxol) as well as a total synthesis of an anti-cancer agent known as Salilcylihalamide. I’m currently employed as an instructor at a small college.
Biden is being handed a golden parachute and it will be funded by the republicans. He’ll have a cushy retirement “administering” $755 million over the remainder of his life.
Thank you for your contributions in fighting cancer. The funding by the NIH for cancer research is some of the very best money spent by the federal government and it apears to me that the programs they fund are based on merit.
I’m doing just fine with Gerson and a few supplements. It costs a lot less than $1B.
Sir,
Have your colleagues discussed the best way to nominate specific programs to moonshot, without running through a political gauntlet or vetting by Big Pharma?
Why, all they need is help from PP for the human embryo stem-cell harvesting to begin their ‘monumental’ research.
Even w/out, the GOP would stand and clap at the great ‘charity’ and ‘care’ shown to Humanity
*spit*
“Have your colleagues discussed the best way to nominate specific programs to moonshot, without running through a political gauntlet or vetting by Big Pharma?”
Great question. I’m not sure I can answer that but I’ll try. Having worked in academia and big pharma I know that each has their own agenda and I recognize the importance of both. Big pharma needs to develop products that can be produced on a large scale that will be profitable for the company. Those in academics are interested in breakthroughs for the sake of furthering our scientific knowledge of the disease states and how we might go about finding a cure, without regards to cost. I think a panel comprised of representatives from both would be useful in allocating resources based on progress presented at a central meeting. Actually there is an institution in place that invites those from the entire scientific community to meet for a week, present progress and chat informally. These conferences are know as the Gordan Research Conferences. There is a third organization know as the World Health Organization (WHO) which uses resources taken form both academia and pharma to further the treatment of diseases worldwide. They should also be included in these discussions. In short, we need everyone to come together, recognizing the importance of everyone involved to find effective treatments that would be available to everyone who needs them.
$1B Moonshot? Oh I see. Biden has Colon Cancer.
