I suppose I should feel good about 358 days left, but somehow I find it to be depressing.

But that’s just me, I don’t want to put a damper on any celebrations!

I received a roll of toilet paper with omuslim’s picture printed on each sheet for my 2012 birthday. It was meant to cheer me up. My birthday is November 6.

This right here is why I love you, Laz. In the manliest non-gay way, of course.

I might be dead within 30946847 seconds. Since I want to belt this out, it's 30946847 seconds too long for me.

We need a countdown clock in the sidebar.

Please add me. It will be great when our long national nightmare is over.

The Z is a pronunciation guide

Then they are pronouncing it incorrectly.

There will be a new word added every day.

By 2 days left, it will be one ‘ell of a rant. :)

"when the word is pronounced, as it is in English, Mozlem with a z"

The z is how English speaking people pronounce the word ... not "they" ... whoever they are

tomayto .. tomahto .... ant, ahnt ... New York, New Yawk ....

The difference is in how Moslems pronounce it. As the article stated, there was a vast difference in the meaning of which, in the Arabic language, there is none. The word Moslem, used with a “z” sound, simply would not make sense to an Arab.

Unfortunately, we Americans tend to be exceptionally lazy with regard to language.

agreed on the lazy part

But your saying ... even moSlem (rather than mozlem) does NOT have a different meaning as the article states ?

"Moslem" in Arabic means "Submissive one". That is with a hard "s". To use the "z" instead does not change the meaning of the word as the author states, it simply is not done in the Arabic language. Illustrating the difference in Americanized English is difficult since we tend to overlook things like this mostly because we deal more in context than literal, but an example would be "Mace" and "Maze". Were you to tell someone to wander through the Mace, they would not know what you meant. Same for telling someone to spray an attacker with Maze.

muslim too ?

Not sure I understand what you are asking. Were you to travel to any of the major Arabic countries (Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Syria, etc.) you would not hear "muzlim/muslim". What you would hear is "moh-slem" as that is how the word is pronounced. Same with their holy book. You would hear "Kohr-ahn" vice "koo-ran/kuh-ran". We Americans can equate the two, other languages do not.

What the author initially posited is correct in the context of different pronunciations have different meanings. But for him to say "Moslem" means "one who is evil" is incorrect from a language standpoint.

When I was a child in New Zealand it was spelt moslem (pronounced mozlems)and I was taught at church that they hated me and wanted to kill me because I was a Christian...

Then as an adult I came to America to find that few people here knew about the moslems hatred of Christians...

OK then ... the PRONUNCIATION of the relatively same letters (to English speakers) DOES make a difference ... yes ?
