People like to complain about how much the NFL tries to protect QBs, put dresses on them and all that nonsense. But really there is no athlete in sports more pampered than the MLB pitcher. With relief pitchers, and the DH, and a punishment that refuses to acknowledge that they only play 1/5 of the games. And they tend towards to top of the pay scale.

You make good, logical points.

The obvious reason the owners want this is because more hits = more excitement = more fans = more revenue

The MLB did no favors to pitchers by lowering the mound. There weren't as many arm injuries as well back in the day. Pitchers pitched way more innings and had less problems. Pitchers are babied but they have also had to deal with smaller ballparks and roided batters and the DH.

On the other hand, an ace starter will face 1,000 batters in the course of a season.

And an everyday position player will only make 650 Plate Appearances.

And more physical effort is required to throw, say, 110 pitches than to play nine innings in the field at any position -- save catcher.
