This one is not included in the HP canned answers website.
Have an HP 2620, PC running XP. After PC has been booted, printer works ok for a short while. Then stops. Will not print. Will not scan. Just get a "cannot connect to printer" error message.
I have tried to uninstall and reinstall. Stops, gives error message, "cannot uninstall."
I have tried to reload software. Will not recognize printer, says "connect later." I try that, no go.
If I reboot, runs for a little while, then stops.
If I open the printer window and hit "reload" for printing, command does nothing, then print window closes.
Any ideas? And please, no "XP sucks/get Win 7" replies.
Is it parallel, Ethernet or USB?
HP sucks/get Brother
Try subscribing to one of several reputable “PC maintenance” applications. I know the subscription version of Malwarebytes has multiple tools to uninstall, diagnose, or fix software. I also subscribe to AVG for virus protection, and it has multiple fix-it tools as well.
ask Carly.
They did not for my perfectly good Photosmart printer. Have to keep an old XP machine around to print photos. No more HP for me ever again. They seem to want to force you into a new printer every time MS comes out with a new OS by refusing to support older printers with updated drivers.
Are you using the Windows uninstaller? If that doesn’t work, try Revo Uninstaller.
Call Carly. She can fix anything HP related.
Seriously, it sounds like your hardware is hosed. Time to go printer shopping.
You will need to find the drivers for that specific printer and download them and try to reinstall. If you have a system backup you can try that.
You can reload XP, which may take like a day or so and is fraught with issues getting 2nd edition update to load, assuming it’s still out there, or you can buy a new printer..
Agreed. I’ll never buy another HP printer. Utter garbage. Our new Brother is a piece of cake to use.

Yeah, attend a Carly Fiorina campaign event and ask that question.
E mail Fiorina
If you’re with the NSA, call Carly. She supplied all their computers.
I have to go to a meeting. But my guess is the printer USB port is set to the wrong speed level. Somewhere in the menu structure is a setting.

Never had a Brother printer but they do have a good reputation. After disappointment with HP (had several) got an Epson. It is awesome and trouble free.
Have you tried a known good printer cable?
Intermittent problems can often be traced to cable fault. Running a rolling chair over it repeatedly can cause a break in one or more of the smaller wires in the cable. Pinching in an access door or drawer can also damage cable.
Are the cable connections snugly fitted?
An intermittent connection would explain the “cannot uninstall” msg. no dsta exchange.
Same with power cable.
I have given up on HP printers due to non existent support (used to be much better). I switched to Brother. Their laser printers are simple to work on.
“ask Carly.”
Not until they unplug it and plug it back in again.
My last HP printer was smashed to pieces onto my driveway. It felt good.
