Without investment returns there is no way they could pay out the benefits they have pro used. As it is now most of them figure in a higher rate of return than is reasonable.
You are right, having to pay current and retirees out of the current budget would be an interesting school board discussion. NYC and some other cities already have more retired police than current.
Yes. The tax payer will have to pay. And that means that there will be higher taxes and/or more money printed.
My SS projection is in the couple of thousand a month when I turn 65. My guess is that the dollar will be so inflated by then that my SS will amount to about half of that in today’s dollars.
And they will fix the reported cost of living numbers so they won’t have to give you a SS COLA increase.

Now that we have a brief hiatus from QE, I see the bears in full force. Right now, there is nothing good going on the economic front. These things tend to feed upon each other, letting the dominoes start.
