Not saying it’s a bad product, just as I own an iPhone and like it. Just saying that throughout the Internet sphere there seems to be whole cadres of people who will rise up to defend the companies I noted, whether warranted or not, that’s all. And yeah, there are some really strong sentiments that are elicited by these companies. I just never understood this.
I’m not cheerleading for the Nest. It’s a good product and I like the features it offers. There are others in the marketplace that have similar features and UI’s. My wife liked the Nest, so that’s what we bought. It could have just as easily been a competitor if that’s what she wanted. It really didn’t matter to me.
The one thing I do like is the ability to adjust the total swing temperature. +5 to -5 off the setpoint if you liked it that much. Made it act more like a mercury type. I set mine for 0 and -3 on the swing for heat and 0 to +5 on AC.
Other programmable thermostats that I have had didn’t offer that. So the furnace/AC would cycle on a 1 degree change which was really annoying. It would be on reach the setpoint and shut off. In a few minutes it would kick back on and run for a few minutes and back kick off.
