The name "Del Monte" was pretty famous in California when he was born. There was a grand hotel in Monterey named the "Del Monte" which attracted the ultra rich from far and wide. The summer social season revolved around the Del Monte. It failed in the Great Depression and the land was acquired by the Naval Post Graduate School.
I wonder if (or how) he might have been connected.
