His funeral was amazing in the setting of St. Paul’s cathedral, but the most moving part of the day was when the barge carrying his coffin was moving slowly up the Thames and the dock workers dipped their cranes in salute.
Fascinating read. Thanks for the ping.

I went to Blenheim Palace in 1991 while TDY to RAF Upper Heyford. I had a rental; drove down and spent the whole day there. Wonderful place, and I was able to pay my respects to whom I consider the greatest man of the 20th Century (Ronald Reagan being second).
He wrote a very good book called, “The River War” about fighting dervishes on the upper Nile. It was very good writing. I have not checked, but I think it was before the Boer War and what he wrote about that. Remember “Follow the biscuit.” Following it put him in good stead for what was needed in the second world war.
Thanks for posting this.
Thank you for the thanks and you’re welcome.
I agree. That came to my mind and I was thinking how despicable when I was watching a Churchill documentary the other night on NetFlix.
Interesting about the bookstore.
I actually just heard that the other night, about his interesting in brick laying, while watching a documentary about him on Net Flix.
Thanks for your post. Will read.
That book is available from Amazon (Kindle) fror free-

Awww...nice tribute. Pretty marmalade.
It said in the documentary I saw he was a big lover of creatures.
He had a particularly nasty relationship with one Lady Astor. There are a couple of exchanges betqween the two that I loved.
In one, Lady Astor noted that he’d had a bit much to drink when at a party. She said, “Sir Winston, you are drunk!”.
He replied “Indeed I am, and you are ugly. In the morning, I shall be sober, and you will still be ugly!”
Another exchange had Lady Astor telling him, “Sir Winston, if you were my husband, I should give you poison.”
His reply? “If I were your husband, I should drink it!”
Exiting a cab in the upper East Side, Winston forgot what side of the road Americans drive on and walked right in front of a vehicle. He was taken to hospital and was lucky to have had a full recovery.
Very interesting. How badly did he get hurt?
In the documentary I saw, it said he had a mild heart attack while visiting the United States during the war. His doctor withheld the information from him and told him to get some rest for a few days...saying it was a pulled muscle. It came to light years later.
Thanks for the links. I not too long back heard mention of that movie.
Manchester died shortly before the final volume 3 was finished. It was finished by Paul Reid.
