Critics across the world have roundly praised the new Star Wars film, celebrating its 'nostalgic homage' to the original trilogy after a series of disappointing CGI-heavy prequels. The first reviews in newspapers and websites will make happy reading for fans of the space saga, with Episode VII: The Force Awakens coming ten years after the last offering. The Daily Mail's film critic Brian Viner offered four stars, saying: 'Devotees can now lather up with their Yoda-shaped soap under that Darth Vader shower content that in the hands of director and co-writer JJ Abrams, the empire has struck back. 'The Force Awakens is the most exhilarating film yet in this mighty franchise. It is the magnificent seventh.' Robbie Collin, in the Daily Telegraph, gave the film five stars, saying director JJ Abrams's effort managed to 'reconnect with its long-missing past'.

Looks like mission accomplished for Abrams and crew. Thank god Disney got the franchise away from Lucas.

Although it's somewhat ironic that the story of the Evil Empire is being told by THE evil empire.

So this is less CGI heavy? A return to models, puppets, and stop motion animation? Shooting on location with matte paintings rather than virtual computer locations and a green screen?

I rank Ep 3 as the third best Star Wars movie. I might even have it at 2. Anyway, now expectations are high.

Personally, I didn’t find any of the prequels disappointing.

“’Devotees can now lather up with their Yoda-shaped soap under that Darth Vader shower...”

That’s something I really didn’t need to read.

Really? Not even Jar Jar Binks? Not even Hayden Christensons poor acting? Natalie Portman’s wooden acting? Turning Yoda into a spastic pinball instead of the philosopher like he’s suppose to be? Incongruent plotlines? Awful, awful scenes of...just talking? Horrible, obvious CGI backgrounds? Bored actors who know they’re just acting to nothing, no inspiration? Midichlorians that completely dispel the wistful, magical quality of the Force from the original films? Really?

Attack of the Clones is the worst, Phantom Menace just a little better.

In comparison to each other, that is true, but there is nothing in Phantom that you need to progress the Star Wars story. Kenobi is misused, Anakin is there to appeal to kids, but annoying as crap, and becomes a deus ex machine to end the whole shebang. Don’t get me wrong, there are some exceptional visual imagery in these films, but... they go against everything Lucas had said prior about film-making and storytelling.

I dislike them when I’m not watching them. But I can still enjoy them. The fact is once you give those horns and the crawl you’ve got me for the next 2 hours. Even if when the closing credits run I’m all “yeah that kind of sucked”, I have fun during.
