Do you really want them to tie up $34 MILLION!!! per year on one player? That's too high a percentage of the payroll to commit to one guy, especially one you're importing from outside the organization.

They did get Samardzija, who's not quite in Greinke's class, but is a pretty good pitcher. Suppose they get another good, not great, pitcher and maybe a hitter. Would that be a more effective use of their money than tying it up in one player?

Dunno, but I think the diamondbacks may have bought themselves a ticket to a winning playoff season. To do the same, the Giants need some better pitchers, much more than hitters.

Dunno the Giants’ budget but if you factored in deep playoff revenues with some chances at the World Series, maybe it would have been worth it.
