Two years ago Google and NASA bought a D-Wave 2X quantum computing system and the Chocolate Factory has now pronounced itself very pleased with the results.
"We found that for problem instances involving nearly 1000 binary variables, quantum annealing significantly outperforms its classical counterpart, simulated annealing. It is more than 108 times faster than simulated annealing running on a single core," Hartmut Neven, Google's director of engineering reported on Tuesday.
Now comparing almost any operation against a single core is a bit of a fudge, but the results show that Google and NASA certainly feel D-Wave's take on quantum computing is working. Many in the industry have suggested that D-Wave's claims about its systems were overhyped, but a paper [PDF] published by the Google team suggests otherwise.
The Chocolate Factory also ran tests on the machine using an algorithm called Quantum Monte Carlo, which simulates running quantum problems on ordinary silicon and again, the results were up to 100 million times faster.
The decision to invest in D-Wave systems was a controversial one, since some in the industry think that the company has oversold the quantum abilities of its hardware. While it's significant that Google refers to it as a quantum annealing system, the company is still happy enough and, in September, signed a seven-year contract with D-Wave for more of its hardware.
Neven said there was still a ways to go with quantum computing, but that the tests had shown that existing hardware will work for certain tasks much faster than anything else on the market. How broad a range of tasks is something Google will be spending a lot of time finding out. ®

In other news, Microsoft is hard at work on the new version of Windows capable of bringing this machine grinding to a halt! ;)
I guess there’s FReepers who understand the benefits of this kind of speed.
Seems to me if there is something out there that is unfathomably fast, input data about nerves, the nervous system and brain injury and pop out a way to heal it.
do all the veterans with the injury a big service.
if it can’t do that, what can it do?
This means it completes an action before you even ask it to?
It means it’s obsolete before you buy it.
The PTB at Google state as their goal, “to be the literal mind of God”. Nothing to worry about here at all.
Yes but is it as fast as Obama calling for gun control when a mass shooting happens?
It’s a little closer than where we were.
Quasar Found 420 Trillion Times Brighter Than Our Sun
Does anyone have any idea how brighter an object just 1 trillion times brighter than the sun is?
Most of us could/would not benefit from a PC that is just 10 times faster. But....100 million times faster!!!!
Runs on Chrome OS ,only works when connected to the internet
I always wanted to type faster—maybe this machine would be able to help with that.
believe nothing that nasa or google says
i thought nasa’s primary mission was MUSLIM OUTREACH / MUSLIM FEEL GOOD ABOUT / SELF ESTEEM BUILDING FOR ACCOMPLISHING NOT A FING THING
Ha! Reminds me of an Arthur C. Clarke classic short story. The Nine Billion Names of God
It will still lag on a Battlefield server when it is chock full of Eastern Europeans with pings over 250. And everything will still be “gay”(Russkies think everything is gay).
And forcing it down the throats of users on older Windows versions who have managed to obtain some level of stability.
The Quantum chip is 2^300th Power.
So you can understand this.
Moore’s law has been in place since the 1960s. He said the microchip would double in power every year or so.
So if Moore’s law of the microchip kept doubling in power every year. How many years would it take to get to the first Quantum Chip?
Answer: A little over 6,200 years.
Let’s think about this 6,200 year jump. 5,000 years ago we had Pharaohs in Egypt. Jesus was around 2000 years ago. So this chip is a leap of 6,200 years forward in chip power.
This is why it’s called the great leap.
What does this mean? Well over the years we have seen how computers have become better as the processing power improved. Think about it this way. When Thomas Edison created the light bulb. Think how much the world had changed in over 100 years. However, if you would have told people what would happen at the time about it. They would have never believed it because they would look back and how life was. Ditto the personal computer that came out in the late 60s early 70s. Although it took far less than the light bulb.
The Quantum chip will do this. In other words we will be LITERALLY LIVING in the Jetsons very soon. 14 years from now is the target date or 2029.
The so called Elite call it “The Singularity”. Just look it up on Youtube and it will give you a good explanation about it. Yes this will be in your lifetime.
So... a computer built this way might actually run your Fallout 4.
"I bought a new camera. It's so advanced you don't even need it."
