Why Does Fox News Lie About Phone Record Metadata and the NSA?
8 December 2015 | CodeToad

Fox News continues to propagate the propaganda that the NSA needs to have our personal phone record metadata in order to prevent terrorism and that Americans against government intrusion of our privacy are hurting America.

Phone record metadata includes the phone numbers involved, the time of the call, and the location of the phones at the time. This information is available from the phone carriers. We all have cell phone bills that show each and every phone call.

For the San Bernadino muslim terrorist shooting, Fox News claims the FBI does not have access to metadata phone record information of the terrorists because the NSA isn't allowed to keep that information any more, yet, the FBI has access to the data by merely presenting a subpoena to the phone companies to obtain that information. In fact, there are programs within the phone companies to present such information to law enforcement agencies upon receipt of a subpoena.

Why does Fox News continue this assault on the privacy of Americans? Why do they insist the government have automatic access to our personal and business information? Why does Fox News lie and claim without the NSA capturing our personal information that the information is not available for criminal investigations? Why does Fox News lie and claim the FBI doesn't have access to these records?

Don’t expect the FBI to be truthful to the media. I wouldn’t think they would want the bad guys to know what they have.

Metadata can reveal relationships. Relationships can reveal:

Who knows who
Who belongs to which organizations
Who has what interests

This article is an informative introduction

In what ways? I just had someone forward a Fox interview from today that had Gretchen Carlson stating how the FBI isn’t able to get the phone record metadata since the NSA no longer can record it.

After obama foxnews went pretty far to the left. They used to be a centrist news channel with center-right/right-wing talk show hosts. Now they are a borderline leftwing news with a centrist/center right hosts.

As to the NSA vs FBI. Their whine is most likely “the FBI didn’t have “real time” access to the cell data.” While true in a very simplistic fashion at the same time mostly meaningless. This is classic leftist propaganda slight of hand.

What fox is saying but only through implying is that if the NSA could track us 24/7 the FBI could have called over, given the names/cells in the area and the NSA could “zoom in” on the info and give it to the FBI without all that nasty “due process”/”warrant” stuff that no one really needs or wants.

This magic NSA metadata is nothing more than Phone company BILLING RECORDS.

The Phone companies collect and keep this for years and always have.

That’s curious. I would certainly like to know if there is some unforeseen problem with the changes.

Burner phones? repeaters? aliases?
None seem likely to apply.

FOX news has rolled over to the rest of the liberal MSM.

None of that "metadata" information regarding a private citizen should be available to the government without due process. In other words, search warrants and subpoenas based on probable cause.

Fishing expeditions with no probable cause are just as Unconstitutional as they always have been.

For the government to pretend that there is some kind of new right for them to gather this data is absolutely ludicrous.

Obtaining such data without probable cause is a clear violation of the Fourth Amendment.

Not to worry, that data is still collected, just not by NSA ... and the conversations ... just not by NSA ... your privacy is safe from inquiring minds in DC, but not from other nations.

Sounds like a simple statement of fact. Is it not true? Is stating the fact the same as promoting a certain course of action?

Isn’t it a big leap to get to “Fox News” is lying about the NSA, because Gretchen made this statement in the middle of some interview?

I think we all agree about that.

I want to know why Fox continues to claim the information is not available to the FBI when it is available. Fox claims because the NSA doesn’t have it so the FBI doesn’t have access to it, even though every phone company out there has systems in place to provide that information on notice.

Gretchen isn’t the only one on Fox making these statements so your defense of Fox is without merit.

“Sounds like a simple statement of fact.”

No, it is not a “simple statement of fact” that the FBI doesn’t have access to metadata because the NSA doesn’t have it. I already covered that in my opening thread. The FBI does have access to metadata, just not through the NSA.

Reading comprehension is a problem with you.

“. I would certainly like to know if there is some unforeseen problem with the changes.”

None. the NSA gets its metadata directly from the phone companies. I have personally been involved in that. If the phone company doesn’t generate the metadata then the NSA doesn’t have it either. Denying the NSA direct access doesn’t preclude that information from being available. The law continues to require phone companies to keep those records.

Exactly, so I don’t see why Fox continues to lie and claim that information isn’t available unless the NSA has it to give. The NSA get that information directly from billing records.
