Here is one of the reasons why the Fed is confident the US economy is strong and resilient enough to sustain a rate hike: since January, the US has added 293,900 waiter & bartender positions and zero manufacturing workers.

Unless one is an economist, no further commentary is needed.

If one is an economist, we eagerly look forward to an extended discussion why one should focus only on the blue line and ignore the red one, debate the adverse impacts of the weather (both hot and cold) on manufacturing, listen to how the collapse of high-paying jobs is actually a good thing for low-paid food servers, and how this is merely a confirmation of the bullish split of the US economy into a growing services and a "slightly softer" manufacturing sector.

 

Here is the monthly change just in manufacturing jobs: three has been a decline in 3 of the past 4 months.

With 94 Million of us "out of the workforce", we have to spend our time somewhere, so that explains the Bartenders.

Worked as bartender part-time many years ago (30?). Made bank. Loved it. Did it for years. Moved on.

Tried again a few years ago for a bit of extra cash... my how the world has changed. Lots of customers. They just don’t tip like they used to. In this economy, a beer costs too much to begin with. Tipping on top of it? I didn’t last long, we’ll put it that way.

Princess riverdawg works part-time as a waitress (usually 12-15 hours a week) while attending college. She typically makes $250-300 a week, double what she made at her on-campus work-study job with the same hours.

The bars in my area (northern NJ) aren’t doing well; few people have the money left to go out. They just buy it at the store and take it home.

In the “new normal”, people will either be among the lucky few with real jobs, be unemployed/involuntarily retired, or serve food and drinks to people with more discretionary income.

I wonder how accurate this really is. A lot of factories are hiring in our area. We’ve been joking about the revolving door where I work because so many start with us but soon find some place else that pays better.
