In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it's been a long time since Return of the Jedi, and a lot has changed. And one of the changes we haven't heard about yet? The Empire's new name. Turns out the Empire and the Rebels are both called something different in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
While taking a tour of the props and costumes from the soon-to-be released Episode VII we noticed that the Empire was not being called the Empire. It was being called The First Order.
Next to the model of the brand new Resistance X-Wing Fighter was a placard that addressed the Empire as The First Order.
And all the Stormtroopers were all labeled as an arm of the "First Order." Plus they've got a brand new look (as we earlier pointed out in our trailer breakdown).
So looks like the Empire is now the First Order and the "Rebels" have been renamed "the Resistance." Which admittedly isn't as big of a change as the Empire, but still interesting.

Obviously, the author of this article knows very little about Star Wars if he is surprised at the name changes.
I bet it has something to do with Socialism is the only thing that can save the Galaxy from Galaxy Warming
‘Rebels’ probably would have led to a boycott by Black Lies Matter.
The “Hope and Changers”..?
The “Then You Can Keep It-ers”...?
As in no more Emperor.
Yep.
To say nothing about the Winnebago...
Ooops, wrong movie...
“The Empire” was defeated in Episode 6: Return Of The Jedi, was it not? Thereby making “The Rebels” (Go UNLV!) no longer rebels...but the de facto ruling class at that time? N’est ce pas?
They are re branding themselves as the warm and fuzzy empire.
Yawn...
Yeah, I was going to say the same thing, everyone who is following the news has already heard about this, so this author is late to the game.
Star Wars The Farce continues~!
That was in the old “Expanded Universe” storylines, in the books and stuff. The rebels became the “New Republic”.
That all got tossed out when Disney bought the property though, so none of it is canon anymore. Now it seems like they are going with the idea that the universe just kind of fragmented after the Empire fell, and the First Order is trying to reunite the pieces into a new empire.
You might be more right than you think.
The Revenant was a cooler name.
