Baby boomers are what’s wrong with America’s economy
Washington Post ^ | 11/05/2015 | Jim Tankersley

Posted on 11/06/2015 8:07:55 AM PST by MadIsh32

If anyone deserves to pay more to shore up the federal safety net, either through higher taxes or lower benefits, it’s boomers — the generation that was born into some of the strongest job growth in the history of America, gobbled up the best parts, and left its children and grandchildren with some bones to pick through and a big bill to pay. Politicians shouldn’t be talking about holding that generation harmless. They should be asking how future workers can claw back some of the spoils that the “Me Generation” hoarded for itself.

Older doesn’t always mean wiser. You sir, have deomstrated that.

And by gun point you paid your money into SS?

Why not actually change those entitlements, instead of expanding them? (Medicare D in ‘03 for example)

And again, do not forget boomers had their largest electoral participation in 2008.

And voted for Obama.

Hey dumbass, I think you’re on the wrong site. Go back to DU where you can join in with them blaming everyone else for your failures.

The stupid hurts.

I'm on social security, and uh, no they don't, and uh, no they won't. He just lost his credibility right there.

No, he's right. You just didn't understand what he meant.

Your initial Social Security benefits are calculated from something called AIME, or "average indexed monthly earnings":

Indexing Factors for Earnings

Here's a table of the factors, dating back to 1951:

Average Wage Indexing (AWI) Series

Once your benefit is calculated two years prior to age 62, THEN a COLA is applied thereafter. And that is similar, but not exactly the same as inflation.

The author's point is: the average wage index has been increasing faster than inflation. So, the initial benefit (calculated from your wages) has been increasing faster than inflation.

How many people in my generation are

1) In Congress?

2) The President?

3) On the Supreme Court?

4) Control state governments?

Don't worry, you'll get your turn to screw things up.

The real problem is the us against them mentality which got created between unionized (mostly government) workers and the rest of us.

Those on the team got guaranteed inflated pensions in return for their votes. The rest of us got 401(K) plans and, if we were lucky, the company would maybe match up to 3%.

My parents were both government workers for the state university system in North Dakota during their final working years.

This was long before the oil boom when the state was one of the poorest in the nation. They figured out they could no longer guarantee pensions in the mid 1970s and replaced them all with 401(K) type plans.

Believe it or not, it was a Democrat governor and a GOP legislature who figured that out long before it became a national topic. End result is that North Dakota has one of the most secure state retirement systems in the country with no tax increase because most of it was funded by the workers. Novel concept. I think there are a handful of other states which adopted the same system (Wyoming, Utah) with the same result.

It isn't a difficult system when it isn't used as a vote buying scheme.

This is the best post in this thread.

Many of the failures of millennials today can be tied to how they were raised, and the fact that parents still allow 28 year olds to live in the basement.

Adding on to the fact boomers as parents started giving out participation trophies, made everyone feel “special” and were concerned more about “Self esteem” then results, it shouldn’t be a surprise.

Fortunately, being a child of Reagan helped me avoid many of these after school programs designed more to make you feel good, then actually get results.

“American.”

I didn’t ask your current nationality. I’m asking about your roots.

Are you Muslim?

Boomers would be those kids' grandparents, not parents.

The GOP deserves its' fair share of blame. But Obama has gone into uncharted territory.

A boomer born in 1950, would probably have their first child between 1978 and 1982. That first child would enter school in the mid 80s.

Child 2,3,4 would enter school in the late 80s and early 90s, the height of the “self esteem in school and lets give participation trophies” movement.

>> You sir, have deomstrated that.

And you, boy, have “deomstrated” that you should have paid better attention during spelling class.

...say, it’s prime working hours; you wouldn’t happen to be FReeping your brains out while you SHOULD be working that six-figure job — would you?

I think we all know the answer. Another lazy Me Generation gibsmedat. One with a tag line that indicates heshe is, at heart, an #occupy punkette.
