Side note: Tibetan dowries were SO expensive that brothers and male cousins used to pool their scarce resources and TOGETHER buy ONE wife. She inherited the lovely task of taking care of FOUR men, food, sex, the whole nine yards.

I don’t think the communists thought through consequences of their one child policy when they forced it on the country.
Among the consequences were that, given the strong preference for boys in their culture, that many people would take action to make sure that their one child was a boy.
Neither does anyone else.
The difference is that China had, in essence, mandatory charity among formally married couples, provided by the immediate community... in the 16th century!
