Freedom Communications Inc., owner of the Orange County Register, filed for bankruptcy protection Sunday, and its chief executive said he plans to lead a bid to acquire the troubled newspaper company.
The Santa Ana-based newspaper firm, which also owns the Riverside Press-Enterprise, filed for Chapter 11 reorganization in U.S. Bankruptcy Courtâs Central District of California.

I always figured it would be the LA Times which went under.
But the OC Register just filed for bankruptcy.
Everything went under for the most part.
The Register has been under the gun for a long time.
The Times also owned or own La Opinion and that might be making them money.
This after they introduced a Long Beach edition? I wish this was the LA Slime in their shoes, hopefully soon as the LA Slime is one worthless bird cage accoutrement.
I moved to southern Orange County 15 months ago. Every Sunday, the OC Register magically appears on my driveway.
I never ordered it, have no idea who is delivering it, I would at least like to tip them.
So going BK is not a complete surprise.
How the OC Register covered their own bankruptcy

The OC Register is generally conservative in its editorials but its writers were required to use “undocumented workers” instead of illegal aliens, plus I got charged a $18 late fee that was undeserved. That is why I stopped subscribing.
Ugh - what a mess internally - most of the more experienced journalists have retired or gone to the San Diego paper.
The delivery system is a nightmare
2nd or 3rd ownership change in 6 years -
I read British papers to get the real USA news.
Oh, our media know this stuff,
they just don’t report what might
harsh the narrative.

The Register is a good paper. Is there any way we can support it?
“Every Sunday, the OC Register magically appears on my driveway.”
We get some sort of local (small) paper also. The constantly changing delivery drivers either put it in the newspaper tube below the mailbox, or insert it in a plastic bag and drop it on the driveway...which I then pick up & put in the newspaper tube below the mailbox. I don’t pay for it, don’t read it, and don’t even bother with it until recycle day...when I clear out the newspaper tube, and deposit said stuff in the recycle rollout as I pass by the mailbox.
The OC Register has been drifting left for years. Not much to tell them apart from the LA Times nowadays. I think the editorial page is still Libertarian but that is it.
