A mini-controversy appears to be brewing after Fox cameras caught Royals catcher Salvador Perez with some kind of brown substance on his shinguards.
Perez didnt speak to reporters after the game and manager Ned Yost correctly pointed out that there is nothing wrong with the catcher or any position player having the substance, believed to be pine tar, there.
Its not illegal, Yost said. I dont know what it was. It was brown. Its not illegal for a catcher to have it on his shinguard. Its illegal for a pitcher.

Pine Tar, I suppose. OMG!! What about the children?//
As Curt Schilling noted, at least then your pitcher doesn’t have to wear it.
So, instead of the pitcher putting vaseline on his brim, the catcher adds the substance for the pitcher instead.
Holy cow. I played baseball, coached softball, and have watched MLB all my life. The idea that the CATCHER could doctor the ball and deliver it to the pitcher has absolutely never crossed my mind.
Aw,gee !
Say it ain’t so,Joe.

Reportedly, Elston Howard used to scratch up balls with his belt buckle, then throw them back.

Don’t know why I never thought about it. Makes perfect sense.

It used to be common for catchers to have something like a damaged rivet on a shin guard that a ball could be dragged on to put a scuff or cut in it.
I've heard of a spitball, but a sh....
Well it rained before the game so I’ll go out on a limb and say it is plain old mud.
Disclaimer: I’m rooting for the Royals.
He likely just keeps it there for his grip because the ball comes to him sweaty. I don’t get how that’s cheating. Besides, its the ump;s job to keep the pitcher from cheating. He is supposed to inspect the balls.
If it ever ended up on the ball, the Ump would replace it and perhaps worse..in the aftermath..
That’s why he’s in the pros, and we’re watching. Actually I think it’s very racist to accuse a Hispanic player of cheating like that...La Raza is not pleased.
There’s always an angle. Until it’s revealed we spectate in blissful ignorance.
Something else that needs to be pointed out about baseball.
if you look closely at the bats, the batting hats, and nearly every item you can note, you will find that brown substance that has been there for like.....ever...
Brilliant, really, and perfectly legal.
