STEELY DAN
New Frontier Lyrics
Yes we’re gonna have a wingding
A summer smoker underground
It’s just a dugout that my dad built
In case the reds decide to push the button down
We’ve got provisions and lots of beer
The key word is survival on the new frontier
Introduce me to that big blonde
She’s got a touch of tuesday weld
She’s wearing ambush and a french twist
She’s got us wild and she can tell
She loves to limbo, that much is clear
She’s got the right dynamics for the new frontier
Well I can’t wait ‘til I move to the city
‘til I finally make up my mind
To learn design and study overseas
Those lyrics remind me so much of the fallout shelter era circa 1961.
Tuesday Weld, the limbo, JFK’s New Frontier, the Reds will attack first, I remember it all from when I was 12.
I made for my Dad a list of all the guns we were going to need. He said, “Fine, son, go out & earn the money and you can buy whatever you think we should have.”
A schoolmate’s Dad who was a doctor built a blastproof shelter as an annex to their basement. Ground Zero defined as the Washington Monument was about four miles away.
Then there were those Twilight Zone episodes featuring fallout shelters with all the moral dilemmas.
This thread makes me think more of “King of the World”
If you come around
No more pain and no regrets
Watch the sun go brown
Smoking cobalt cigarettes
There’s no need to hide
Taking things the easy way
If I stay inside
I might live til Saturday
No marigolds in the promised land
There’s a hole in the ground
Where they used to grow
Any man left on the Rio Grande
Is the king of the world
As far as I know.
