The NFL acknowledges that one of the game officials should have noticed that 18 seconds were incorrectly run off the clock late in the fourth quarter of Pittsburgh's 24-20 victory at San Diego.
League spokesman Michael Signora says in a statement emailed Monday that "an error by the clock operator" after a touchback allowed extra time to run off, and "it is the responsibility of the side judge to supervise the timing of the game."
The statement adds: "Had the side judge or any of the other six on-field officials noticed the timing error, they could have corrected it."
The NFL will review the work done by the clock operator and game officials.
Didn’t catch that one. Would it have made a difference?
too busy watching my Jets be 3 and 1 :)
of course against no team with a winning record lol
I noticed the clock running at that time...I thought, “Isn’t the clock supposed to be stopped??? Well, they’ll catch it...”
When they didn’t, I just thought, “Oh well....”
It took time away from the Steelers who had to score...They did score on the last second TD...
It gave a time advantage to the Chargers, but didn’t work....
“ZebraGate”
Dumb@ss Chargers should have played some defense and not allowed a TD.
“Had the side judge or any of the other six on-field officials noticed the timing error, they could have corrected it.” In other words, at least EIGHT officials (including the time keeper) all screwed up, in unison. No matter that the team behind was able to score and win the game, the entire crew screwed up in unison. Waiting for the NFL to hold their crews to meaningful accountability. Wait for it, it is coming. Any minute now... Maybe, tomorrow, uh?
Agreed, the Chargers had several opportunities to win this one.
How about the fact that there were penalties all game long, until the Steelers (apparently Gruden and Tirico or whoever the hell it was with him) needed a TD for the win. Favorites? yup. San Diego shafted? Oh yes.
In the closing minute 4th quarter of the Lions/Seahawks game the ball was stripped from a Lions player as he lunged towards the end zone. The ball bounced forward into the end zone and a Seattle player punched the ball out of bounds. The official didn't catch the penalty although he was looking directly at the infraction ... the ball should have been spotted at the one yard line still in Detroit's possession. Instead it was turned over to Seattle at their twenty and they played out the clock. The final score 10-13 for Seattle.
Mistakes by NFL officials in high profile games is frowned upon by the league ... no post season work for the official/officials who screw up.
Did you notice Weddell getting body slammed on the last play when he came up to make the tackle? Ref right there, no call.
Yes I did.
No bias in the officials my a$$.
Holding on the Chargers Olineman almost every play for 3 quarters, but then, magically, nothing the fourth quarter? No roughing the passer on Rivers, ever?
If anything the refs are pushing me away from the game...
Inconsistent flags, stupid calls, missed calls and mind mumbling waits for reviews...
Phantom holding, bad spots, 9yds for a first down, 4 flags on one play, commercial after commercial after commercial, new yellow digits for the fifty-yard line, the stupid “spider cam” that sometimes show the team that is going left to right as if it’s going right to left, the new big red line for field goal range, graphics stuffed with stats that are impossible to read, animation and music that is starting to make me feel like I am no longer the target market, etc..........But, I’m a Pats fan so it’s all good.
Yeah they did. The NFL is 0 and 2 so far on Monday night. Unofficial games. But they know what the ball inflation is at all times.
anyway, it was a nice way for the nfl to get their star black felon QB back in the media....
the Chargers would have been able to run probably 3-4 plays if they had that 18 secs to work with after Phil. scored....
One small step for the NFL, one giant leap...well maybe not that dramatic, but a nice gesture by the NFL to offer a little accountability. Any talk what-so-ever of increasing pay and making them full time has been placed on the back burner. Unfortunately, these repeated performances support the view that the replacements can screw up just as bad as the regular refs and be just as incompetent.
