The state racketeering case targeting New Orleans' "Taliban" gang moved closer to completion as three more reputed members admitted guilt as part of plea deals entered in Orleans Parish criminal court.
Cornie "Porch" Jones, Darryl "Dino" Bannister and Jerome "Sookie" Tolliver each pleaded guilty to racketeering, aggravated battery and public intimidation on Tuesday before Judge Karen Herman. In exchange, the state amended attempted murder charges that potentially could have sent the trio to prison for far longer sentences.
Jones, 27, was sentenced to eight years, according to court records. Tolliver, 25, drew a seven-year sentence. Bannister, 30, will serve six years. The three were accused in the indictment of shooting two rivals on March 31, 2012.
They were among eight reputed Taliban members indicted by an Orleans Parish grand jury in August 2013 and charged with furthering a violent criminal conspiracy in and around their Pigeon Town stomping grounds. The indictment said the gang "promoted a climate of fear through violence and threats of violence" from at least June 2010 until their arrests.
Two of the indicted men – Dale "Check Peazy" Elmore, 24, and Tyrone "Tyga" Davenport, 26 – were convicted in June of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and racketeering. They face mandatory life sentences for the murder of Ralph Bias, killed in a 2011 drive-by shooting on the Pontchartrain Expressway. They are set for sentencing Oct. 21.
