Windows 10 uptake is falling back to earth after an explosive first month.

According to StatCounter, Windows 10 accounted for 7.64 percent of desktop Internet usage in September, compared to 5.38 percent the month prior. Rival metrics firm NetApplications pegs Windows 10 usage at 6.63 percent, compared to 5.21 percent in August.

Both firms still have Windows 10 in fourth place among Microsoft operating systems, trailing behind even Windows XP, a 14-year-old operating system that Microsoft stopped supporting in 2014. Windows 7 remains way out in front, with 51.52 percent usage according to StatCounter, and 56.53 percent according to NetApplications. (Both firms have Windows 7 dropping by more than a percentage point last month.)win10netappssept

Windows 10 got off to a strong start in large part because Microsoft is giving away upgrades to consumers running Windows 7 and higher. The company boasted of 75 million installs for Windows 10 in its first four weeks, while StatCounter observed faster first month adoption than both Windows 7 and Windows 8 during their debuts.

That’s because everyone with 8.x was dying for an improvement. Gonna be a while before Win7 users move.

I “upgraded” from Win 7, but didn’t like it. I burned an ISO image so I could upgrade later if I wish. I hear I only have a year to do that for it to be “free”.

I’ve converted two Windows 7 computers to 10. It’s not that different, but, things actually work, when, they didn’t before.

I have one more laptop to do. So far, no problems at all.

Maybe it’s this computer. I find that Windows 10 is a little slower, sometimes enough to be annoying. I still have the directions someone gave me to stop the advertising, but haven’t done that yet.

Forced upgrades have that effect

It’s not the Operating System that will Microsoft in, it might be their business model.

Mine was slower too until I upgraded to an SSD. Now it boots in less than 15 seconds.

I put Win 10 (beta test) on a PC and a laptop - both 7 years old and running Vista - and now they "fly."

7 and 8.1 look like they are dropping, but 8.0 looks pretty flat. Probably folks that bought a 8 machine, and weren’t savvy enough to go to 8.1, much less 10.

I took a laptop I don’t use much anymore from 7 to 10, but haven’t decided about my desktop yet.

They should have stopped with Windows 7. 8 just sucks - my wife’s laptop has it, and I hate it like crazy - the filing system just ROTS. Maybe I missed something, or maybe there was a later upgrade/patch, but if you could have the Win7 appearance it might be better.

And Win10 watches everything that you do - NOT interested, Billy.

"And Win10 watches everything that you do..."

Yup. And now they're loading their spy-crap onto Windows 7 & 8. See below.

Microsoft Starts Collecting User Data from Windows 7 and Windows 8 PCs

I deleted those four 'updates' from my computer and the next morning it had been placed (updated) there again.

I have now deleted (uninstalled) them again and have turned off the automatic update feature...so far, so good.

I put Windows 10 on my desktop and on a Dell tablet, but it won't install on my laptops (Windows 7 and Windows 8 respectively). "NOT SUPPORTED." Well, both work fine as is, so I'm not upset.

I’m still waiting for this 8.1 laptop’s turn in line for the upgrade.

Meanwhile I’m loving the new desktop with 10 as OEM.

I have an option to load 10 but I am nervous. Can you let me know how it is working for you. Will I lose my bookmarks?
