How in the heck does a short pop dropping in to center field allow ANY runner to get to second base.
Especially a catcher with Yogi's stature.

Berra was actually a very good baserunner in his younger years. He didn't steal bases much---it wasn't the Yankees' style of play---but he was good and intelligent on the bases. Outfielders defending him respected his power and often tended to play him deeper than normal, and he could have exploited that on a shallow pop and gotten a double out of it.
