I am an idea guy - I think what’s more important is not what you imagine IBD’s motives to be - perhaps it’s worth noting, or not - but instead is there validity to what they said?

Yeah, that's a tie that binds many of us together. Now to the bigger point...whether we're talking about criticism of the Pope or of Trump or anyone else - it is sometimes salient to know the motives of the critic. But what's always more important is whether or not the criticism is valid, regardless of the source.
Ulterior motives often lead to lying and misrepresenting - as we all know - but truth is truth, even if the bearer of that truth is often wrong and ill motivated. Just seems to me that the emphasis on message boards has gone overboard on attacking the messenger and ignoring the validity of parts of the message.

The headline here in the NYC area was that he spoke out against the death penalty; abortion not even mentioned.
