-- Some academic researchers (not the EPA or CARB) took the cars on real world driving tests and saw no difference on level highways with cruise control, just 10x higher NOX on hills. --

That "academic" squealer was The International Council on Clean Transportation, funded by the usual suspects.

Principal funding for the ICCT comes from the ClimateWorks Foundation, with additional generous support from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Energy Foundation, and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.

Hmm. ClimateWorks. Never heard of them, either.

ClimateWorks' core funders -- The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, KR Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Oak Foundation, and The David and Lucile Packard Foundation -- are committed to addressing the challenge of global climate change through strategic grant-making. ...

The Packard Foundation believes that climate change is the defining issue of our day.

Makes we want to go out and fuel up some old Packard automobiles!

"“Only then did VW admit it had designed and installed a defeat device in these vehicles in the form of a sophisticated software algorithm that detected when a vehicle was undergoing emissions testing,” the EPA said in its letter to VW Friday."

Chrysler got caught a long time ago using the hood-open-underhood-light-on mercury switch to go into EPA mode. It wouldn't take a very sophisticated "Al-Gore-rythym" in a digital control system to change things when out on the highway instead of being in traffic in town like the EPA test was designed for (LA City Traffic).
