The St. Louis Cardinals became the first team to clinch a playoff spot in the major leagues Saturday, but it wasnt anything they did. The San Francisco Giants loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks, a few hours after the Chicago Cubs beat the Cardinals 5-4, made sure St. Louis will make the postseason.
This is the fifth consecutive season the Cardinals will make the playoffs, a run of postseasons that is a franchise record for the team with the second-most World Series titles (11).
St. Louis success this season -- the Cardinals have by far the best record in baseball (92-56) -- came despite injuries to several key players, which reaffirmed the organizations strengths in drafting and development.

I'm a Cardinals fan. But despite our success I've never been a Mike Matheny fan. There's something about him I don't like.
This is a medium volume ping list during the baseball season and a low volume ping list when all life stops in late October.
If you would like to be on the ping list please FReepmail me.
My braces where a massive disappointment this year I hope next year is better.
Braves
The jury is still out on Matheny. I wonder if the team's success is "in spite of his presence" instead of "because of it." What I mean is I've seen teams stay competitive even when the manager/coach was not the best in the world.
But I'm still happy for them.
But my Cubbies seem to be making a comeback. Maybe, just maybe, dare I hope for, no, I can't say it, it may jinx them!
I miss seeing Bobby Cox giving the umpires hell at home plate. Ah, the good old days.
I'm sure your teeth are fine...
But Atlanta aside, let's be honest: "disappointment" in 2015 is spelled R-A-Y-S.
Re #5:
In spite of.
By the way, I have never seen a game at Wrigley. But it’s on my bucket list.
Even in last place in our division, the Boston Red Sox are still in it. Well until we lose one game. But we are only 7 games with only 7 teams to crawl over to get there.
Go Cards!
Red Sox Post Season Tickets Will Go On Sale Soon! :)
I blame Obama.
I don’t recall seeing this picture before and I can’t make out what that thing is hanging over the fence. Can someone help?
I used to know exactly what game it was. But someone had set their drink right on the wall and then knocked it over. The photo shows the player be instant before he got a face full.
Fascinating pix. But I am absolutely sure it is a drink falling off the wall when the owner is looking for the fly ball coming (likely HR). Obviously Sox but cannot say who or when exactly. (No later than ‘60s, by good dressing and real hats.)
Unfortunately for Red Sox fans, pennant fever in Boston this year was just a 48-hour virus.
The player was Al Smith and it happened during the 1959 World Series between the White Sox and the Dodgers.
Got it. Thanks.
