Bizarre images of wild pig with BLUE insides go viral
The Daily Star ^ | 9th September 2015 | Harry Kemble

BIZARRE images of the insides of a wild pig – which has FLUORESCENT blue fat – have emerged online leaving people scratching their heads.

Blue pigmentation is often caused by copper poisoning – but the land where the animal was shot only has mercury mine shafts.

The post's author – GlendilTEK – on imgur website wrote how none of the pigs shot by his in-laws on the Californian ranch had blue fat.

He wrote how the rest of the pig was "normal" – the meat, the blood, and the hide.

As for the pig, I assume this is a National Enquirer type rag...... but thanks for introducing me to Billie Holiday! I’ve heard of her, but never really listened to her music. Beautiful (or I’m getting old).

There were mercury mines in the coastal mountains from Paso Robles north. Some were still active into the 1960’s.
Had a neighbor who worked in one in 1965.

Maybe mercury.
It does accumulate in fatty tissues.
Whether it would be blue, I don’t know.
I know copper and silver might make that color.
Silver in humans turns your skin blue.
Copper does similar.
Weird.

The one near Paso (that was restarted by H. Biaginni)?

Buena Vista, and Klau.

I know that place very well, even though it's been 5 years or so since I've been there.

They will eat anything. Maybe got into some blue dye.

This is definitely due to the pig eating grain that’s had a rodenticide such as Diphacinone added to it. The poison has a blue dye added to it so that you can positively identify animals which have been eating it.

The hog must have been eating small amounts of it over a period of time in order to build up that much dye without dying from the poison.

Probably a fat soluble fluorescent co pins from a mushroom or lichen or something else the pig was eating.

Hydrophobic aromatic compounds often are fluorophores and if ingested will accumulate in the fat cells.

A little bit of chemistry will answer the question.
